I cant understand any samll hatchbacks being auto, except that I also cant understand why half of the modern hatchbacks on the road sell at all, they are so terrible to drive... so given that the people buying them don't like driving (they mus'nt!) its not surprising they are auto.

Then throw all the mini SUV garbage into the pile and its a wonder there are any manual cars left to drive at all. I'm glad there are some of us who still like manuals.
Spot on. Public Holiday here in Perth so I took the new Golf out for an early morning spirited run - what a lot of fun the manual gearbox is. I drove the equivalent DSG for a day and it really left me uninspired. The 90kW turbo'd 1.4 is 'very willing'. On the fwy and you can even tell those who believe they have to go 10km/hr slower because its double demerits long weekend. What a lot of sheep we have.

People who found dsg uninspiring, did u drive it in D / S mode? If yes, of course it would be uninspiring.

Driving my mk6 GTI in M mode, has helped me to shift up faster then Keichi Tsichuya (the Drift King) and perform heel toe on downshift as perfect as any experienced race drivers and consistent too! Thanks to new tech albeit it may have made my left foot rather under utilised

yes I did, and it ain't the same. yes the shifts where faster, but on a number of levels, I still prefer a h-gated shifter with a clutch.
even if 90% of my driving is stop-start inner suburban peak hour Sydney traffic.

Of course, as standard, doing a heel and toe with a DSG will see the Brake Throttle Override kick in and deny you any throttle for over a second after you release the brake.

I didnt say that i was specifically brilliant in driving a DCT equipped car.

Still continually learn how to drive by attending defensive / advanced / car skid control driving courses on at least once a year for the last 4 years.

In fact, anyone can do perfect upshift and downshift heel toe in any DCT equipped car from a Golf GTI to the McLaren P1

But in the hands of pro racing drivers, this helps them to achieve record lap times and win races.

yes i did - and while it held the gears longer it still left me uninspired. The sheer balance of the Mk7 Golf using the manual is very very good to the point that the DSG simply doesn't match it.
