Hey all,
I just found this online and was blown away at the possibilities!
http://www.makerbot.com/
MakerBot is a 3D printer (it builds 3D shapes using plastic) that you assemble yourself, and it only cost $750US (3D printers generally go for tens of thousands of dollars)! Biggest shape it can build is 4"x4"x6" (inches).
You design your 3D object in CAD, upload it to MakerBot and it 'prints' it out
What can you make with a 3D printer?
They mention they use ABS plastics (apparently same as Lego blocks), as it heats up to 2000 degrees I'm sure other plastics could be used..
It's VERY cool!

Must be some hard to find early mk1 parts like interior trim pieces this could be used for?
76 MkI 3 door - daily drive/project - 1.8 5speed
76 MkI 3 door swallowtail - 16v track car
76 MkI 3 door "long term" project
I've got a hard on.
2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |
This would be awesome for model builders out there too...I see yet another tax deduction!!
"If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."
man that is awesome!! so cheap too.
Hi VWWatercooled folk,
I've been using the Replicator from Makerbot Industries for some 9 months now and have reached the point where I am happy to experiment with others' CAD designs.
Let me know if there is anything you would like made.
This is not a commercial proposition at this stage, but a means of gaining added experience with my 3D printer.
I am based in Woonona, NSW.
