Issues after selling/buying/selling a car privately

In the last six months I have sold a car, bought a temporary car, then sold the temporary car all via Carsales. Each time the transaction itself was smooth and hassle free, the people were good to deal with. It's what arrives in the mail following these transactions that gives me grief.

The first car I sold to a couple in Melbourne, they failed to do the rego change at their end promptly and I must have gotten 4 or 5 overdue toll road notices. Each time I have to complete a form and send it back to the toll company including proof of sale.

The temporary car I bought here in Adelaide, was caught by a speed camera 60 mins before I took ownership. I had promptly submitted my chnage of ownership details, but the system that issues the ticket doesn't appear to record the time that the transfer of ownership took place. So the speeding ticket arrived in my name. I had to complete a stat dec and send it into the authorities.

Last night a un-paid parking ticket notice arrives in my mail box. It's for the temporary car I sold in early July. The ticket is for the morning after the new owner took delivery. I submitted the change of ownership form promptly, but again the parking ticket system doesn't appear to care. I have to complete another stat dec blah blah blah.

Two things I can't believe;

1. Why don't people get their **** in a pile, how much money are people wasting on speeding fines, parking fines, late fees.

2. Why don't these systems know that I didn't own the vehicle, when I told the promptly the date and time it was sold or purchased.

Yes, it is a problem.

In anticipation of such things happening, I put down the date and time of the sale on both the registration papers and the receipt when I sold my car a few years back. It was actually welcomed by the buyer as he knew that he was not going to be stuck by any toll charges or other fines that I might have accumulated but not paid before he bought it.

It might be a good idea to approach your local state MP and suggest that transfer of ownership forms have a place for the date and time of the transfer as well.

They do already, and I completed & submitted it promptly, but apparently it's not used by the systems.

Interesting, because NSW does not (at least I could not find it when I traded my Hiace in on my Caddy Maxi Life). I did approach my state MP after I sold my Torana back in 2000, but nothing happened.

Well, in the case of the latest trade in, I had my personalised number plates transferred so that is not an issue. The dealer took the notice of disposal on the back of the registration form and did the transfer and I have the new permanent registration label. I don't even know what the number plate my old Hiace now has, so I cannot accumulate any penalties/fines anyway.

When I sold my Torana around 12 years ago, I had the Hiace and the Torana and I transferred the number plates over. Back then, the only way was for me to submit the notice of disposal and for the buyer to transfer the registration by post.

But as the topic of this thread says, there can be issues, particularly when selling privately.

My SIster sold her beetle and not knowing what she was doing she DIDNT get a reciept of sale to prove she had sold the car,
THe beetle was driven to byron bay where it accumulated $1600 in parking fines! I didnt find out about her predicament till 2 years after as she was so embarrassed! Which was realy dissapointing as i would have told her to call the beetle in as being stolen hopefuly

well i sold a car then a yr later realised they were still taking money out monthly for insurance lol (ima bit slow ). they paid it all back quick & prompt just needed a bill of sale lol

to my shock had the cops call we once asking if I still owned a old laser hatchback way back in 2003 or so..

the idiot I sold the car to never transffered the vehicle into their name and was involved in some criminal activity in geelong..

had to go to vicroads and sign over the vehicle to the unregistered vehicle database..

When I was 18 I sold a car and forgot to submit the notice of disposal. about 2 years later I came home to my dad waiting at the door to tell me there were two federal police waiting in the living room and did I need my dad to contact a lawyer. I was freaking as my license had expired the day before but I was still driving. Turned out my car had been used in an armed robbery and in the course of the investigation the police had busted into an innocent guy's house while he was asleep and shot him when he reached for his pants (If you were around Sydney in the late 80s you may remember the case, it was a huge story in the media). As the guy they shot was pretty messed up the police were really anxious to solve the original crime to save a bit of face.
