Can you import a car for track use only? Like you have no intent on using on the roads.

As long as the mods are noted with the dvla, the engine doesn't matter. If it is a later engine ie 20vt in a mk1, then you need all the emissions stuff. The car has to be engineered when it gets here anyways, so buy a car with the engine swap you want already and kill 100 birds with one stone. In terms of importing, pre 89 cars can be owned for less than 12 months. Post 89 need to have receipts eg fuel insurance mot to prove it has been used/owned for 12 months. Plus post 89 will usually have to have emissions equipment (cats o2 sensors etc) before it cAn be imported I think.

But the 20VT in a MK1 can only be imported as a personal import as the mods mean it is no longer considered a pre-89 car.

Not from what I was told. It's the same as it is here. If you swap Ye engine- it must be from a later model. If you've owned it for per a year, it means it's a personal import that is not subject to the luxury car tax, sales tax and all the other bs taxes out there.

Google importing cars to oz and send an email. I did mine 3 yrs ago so the rules may have changed, but unlikely.

I'll try again, all the info is here Importing Vehicles to Australia

The PRE '89 rule says that the car must not of been modified after the 1/1/89 - an engine mod after that date changes the build date to when it had major mods.

    It's simple.

The Pre 89 ruling is very solid and has recently been reinforced.

Any substantial mods done after that date mean it is no longer eligible for a pre-89 ruling and it would need to be imported as a private import.

For example, a 1939 Chevy that had been turned into a hotrod in 1986 with an engine conversion performed the same year would be fine. A stock 39 chevy would be fine. A 39 Chevy that had been substantially modified after 1 Jan 89 (e.g. turned into a hotrod in 2000) would not be eligible as a pre 89 car.

The legislation has been linked to and is clear as day.

Damn! I should have imported my v8 E30 instead!

Times a change and when I was importing mine, I could have an engine swap done.

ozgti - was yours a Personal Import, or, imported under the pre '89 rules?

Did you own your Mk2 for a year or more, and bring it over here with you from the UK, as a personal import?

    or

Did you have the car for less than a year, and had the car shipped from the UK, as it came in on the pre - '89 import rules?
