2nd hand prices in the UK are what make them so tempting.

Yeah i agree, you can pick up a good Mk5 R32 for around $20000AUD, you'd be lucky to get a Mk4 for that in Australia. Decent Mk4's go for around $12-13000AUD for a 2004 model. More like $25-30000AUD here.
This isn't bad for under $19000AUD 2006 VOLKSWAGEN Golf 3.2 V6 R32 4MOTION
Pretty much the same car here, higher k's but 1 year newer, $35500 2007 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R32 4-MOTION V MY08 Cars For Sale in SA - carsales.com.au - carsales.com.au
And tbh i don't think you'd end up spending over $16K to import it...

Japanese auctions would be interesting I think, there are companies to do all the paper work for you. NZ has some interesting cars, and is pretty easy to physically get there to check them out, although you do have to be careful of the cars origins as they come from everywhere into NZ.
a late 90s/early 2000s 996 Porsche 911 can be picked up for under 12000 pounds now in the UK.
The same car will fetch 55k plus minimum here.
Lotus Elise? early model for GBP6k. Here? 30-35k
NA1.6 MX5 - GBP700pounds and up. Here? minimum 5k
Maserati 3200GT - can pick one up for 10k. Here? 50k plus
Get the picture?

A long old thread but can someone tell me where the rules can be found to importing a pre January 1989 car?
A old friend of mine in the UK has decided to let his mint Golf Cab go and I want to find out the ins and outs to bringing it here.
Thanks in advance to any help.
Rob
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...les/index.aspx will have all the info you want mate.
Stiggy, yours was probably a personal import brought into the country when the owners migrated here?
