Let Insurance handle it mate!
I was t-boned at a roundabout on the weekend in my lovely Mk7 Trendline (less than 2 months and 1,500km old ) and all four curtain airbags and the passenger side airbag blew. Probably saved my passenger from more serious injury.
Anyway, the tow truck driver and police officer said the airbags usually cost around $6,000 each with the tow truck driver seeming to think that they would repair my car being so new. Given the location of the hit (right on the passenger door), I'm somewhat doubtful it could be safely repaired anyway.
So I'm wondering how accurate that estimate of $6,000 is as the car is insured for $28.5k or new car replacement. A window was also smashed in the accident, thankfully the tint held it together.
Pic below for reference.

Oh, I'm letting them deal with it completely. Still waiting to hear from their motor assessor. I was just curious about that $6k per airbag figure because it seems really high, I was looking online and it suggested anywhere from $1-6k with $3-5k being the average. But I guess it probably has a bit of Euro tax going on.
I would be a bit concerned about how the chassis has been affected although most modern cars dont have a full chassis any more but there are still structural components to consider . Also because that is where the side impact protection bars are located they integrate from the front door hinging area to the rear door striker point so there would be some structural strain at those points as well .
How would a cop know how much specific vehicle components cost ?
Unless I heard it from an auto body shop I would just plain ignore what was stated.
Remember if you sell it you have to declare that the airbags have been deployed.
There are some important safety bits to fix there, the b pillar could be bent, the intrusion bars in the doors may have taken some impact too. If it is to be repaired you should find a someone who is actually qualified, with proper factory spec sheets and manuals. Actually ask to see the credentials of the shop, where is the certificate to prove they are trained and have the up to date documents ?
Watch this vid as it is very similar to your accident https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzOA9XURMUU
Get it wrong and that car will not save you a 2nd time, the lifetime repair warranty etc will be just too little too late.
If you are not confident that the insurance company has selected a repairer up to the task then simply refuse it and explain why.

Can't imagine the curtain airbags are 4 times as much but maybe they are...

To be honest, I would be much more comfortable if they wrote it off given the location of the strike and the fact I've heard more than one person say it may not ever be the same afterwards.
The shop is quoting it up before the assessor has his say. They were up to $13,000 on the quote when I called the other day and they said it was going to be an expensive one so if it's borderline, I'm gonna be pushing for write off as I have new car replacement cover. If it's within the realms of repair, I'll definitely be asking some of the people at my work (I work in insurance assessing (non-motor) and one of our guys in the motor department is ex-VW) to see where they suggest repairs since I also have choice of repairer under my insurer. I would expect to keep my warranty intact, so I'd want it fixed right.
The example in that video is very similar to my accident. I'd estimate the person that hit me collided at around 30 given they accelerated into me while entering the roundabout and apart from a bit of bruising from seatbelts and whiplash, my passenger and I are both okay. Scary though how much damage the doors could be hiding and as the shop also said to me, it doesn't look like much till you open the doors.
They'll write it off, especially if the pillars have been moved.

I spoke to the crash shop yesterday and nothing obviously marked it as a write-off, so probably no frame movement, though I dunno how much I trust them since the guy quoting said he found an extra $2,000 of stuff that needed replacing that he'd initially missed so I'm doubtful he's incredibly familiar with VWs.
Assessor will have a look on Tuesday, so hopefully I'll get an answer soon. I've found a VW approved shop that I'd be interested in having quote up the repairs for me if it's deemed repairable but at this point, it seems kind of borderline when salvage is taken into account.
