How many times will I get pulled over?

I'm picking up a new Multivan this week in Melbourne and driving it back home to Sydney on a permit. Now that means it's going to have no number plates on it for the 850km trek home.

It's also going to be Salsa Red, so not exactly a "blend into the crowd" colour:

So what do you think my chances of are getting home without being pulled over are? Or should I phrase it as "how many times will I get pulled over?"!

I drove my old Mk 1 Caddy ute down from Sydney 2 chritmases ago, left on the 2nd of janurary fro memory, LHD, Californian no. plates, blowing smoke like you wouldnt believe, that was 14.5 litres of oil on the trip (!!!) and loaded to the ground, did not get pulled over at all!! That trip also included a couple of days in Melbourne cruising down to Golfworx's (or wotever he calls himself these days??).
Last july I drove my Caddy van down without no. plates, zilch problems until I went to put fuel in it in Melbourne. The fuel pump shut off and loudspeakers were blaring.
No number plates meant no fuel was allowed due to survellence cameras!!
One thing I found though was I did not recieve any motorway charges in both vehicles!!!
Both had permits too.

Epic oil economy figures. About the same as a low tolerance MK5 engine!

How is this caddy going?

Aaron - is it a sal sac lease or a straight lease? I'll PM you as I may borrow some of your research on the Multi.

Matt drove his Skyline back with a permit but no plates, he didn't get pulled over once. But he did have that problem when he got to the petrol station!

So i'm thinking you will be ok buddy - just don't get petrol.

If it comes with a 100% full tank of diesel I should get home, otherwise I'll have to stop once, but thanks to everyone for the heads up, will walk inside before I try and fill up to make sure there are no issues.

i drove pedros old mk3 diesel back to melb without plates and didnt get pulled over also stopped for fuel too!!!!

It's no 850Km trip, but I drove my MK1 back from the other side of Melbourne, on a permit, with P-plates showing (not supposed to drive a unregistered vehicle on a permit on any probationary license).
About an 150Km trip back, didn't get pulled over once.

There's probably a mathematical equation you could use to estimate the occurrence of Police on your trip back up, but I certainly can't be bothered with it.

How much is the permit costing you, if you don't mind?
I would estimate it's expensive, from state to state, and such a long drive.

The dealer has actually organised the permit, so it's costing me "nothing"

Before I knew that was happening I rang NSW RTA first and as with every dealing with them I have found the people abrubt and not particularily informative. The short version was ring Vic Roads because the permit is needed from where you start.

From memory it's $39 + about $1.10 per day up to 28 days and it is designed purely for a designated trip, ie point A -> B. So in my case it will be a permit to get home, then down to the local inspection station for a blue slip, then across to the RTA for rego. Iv'e already got the green slip and insurance sorted so it's just the blue slip and rego when it gets here. Still deciding if I want different number plates on it or not yet.

I voted none. It's a new van so more than likely if it's spotted they would assume a permit. Then again, it is a van so depending on the cop, they could think you're a serial killer.
