    How many kw gareth? Modern cars put out a bit more power than those crappy old Pinto engines (even when modded). IIRC, even my V8 Commodore had <100kw from the factory.

    Yes, I'm down on P-Platers. Almost every day there's an accident on the M5 & the person that's gone up the tail of the car in front is a P-Plater. Learn the basics, then start modding.

    This is why i hate the L & P plate system. (although it does have many advantages) everyone simply judges and thinks that any P or L plater is a Hoon or in-experienced inpatient and incompetent driver.
    The GT is ''Application Required.'' not banned.
    I am going to do a Defensive driving course in the near future.

    At 16 you may go for your L's (as i did)I have to do 120 hours of driving to go for my p's. i have had my L's since April 2011... in that time i have done just over 200hours in a V8 Calais and a family friends twin turbo BMW. so i dont think a MK5 TDI is to powerfullfor me to control even with mod's compared to those 2 cars that i have been taught in so the modifications will not make a difference to my driving ability's (not saying that im some superstar...)

    This has gone completely off topic. if you don't have anything to add that is helpful please don't reply. And it really has nothing to do with you what i do to my car, the car is in show room condition as confirmed by 2 different mechanics.
    I am a long way away from the next service and i have money aside for it already.

    Every day I see Red P-Platers that have done their mandatory hours of driving failing to follow basic road rules (eg: keep left unless overtaking & WTF are you doing in the fast lane of a 110kph zone anyway?). All these drivers have passed the test & think they are good drivers.

    Good luck to you if you can hold it all together, not succumb to peer pressure, not succumb to an excess of teenage testosterone and don't have the typical teenage attitude that you know everything.

    Agreed it has gone way off topic. You can't judge a person on their P's just because a small number of P-platers cause accidents. I am a red-P-plater myself. I have had two defensive driving courses, taken my car to two happy laps events (to learn and understand how my specific car handles etc). I must had admit, I had a few close calls almost crashing when I had my Polo but that wasn't my fault (faulty gearbox). I don't see why people are so against P-platers wanting to upgrade their car. The salesman who sold me my citroen ds3 said, "Be happy, have fun with the car. Add little bits here and there." IMO there is no point driving a car you're not happy with, at least I don't think there is. Be happy with the car, so that way you can enjoy driving without pushing the cr*p out of it.

    I just really hate the typical stereotype of P-platers most people see. Which is just hoons wanting to race everywhere. This IS NOT THE CASE.

    I say have fun with your car but sensibly. If you want to go fast, take it to a race-track.

    hey brad, the little escort was stock at 70kW and mine was tweaked up to around 120kW, my time for 0-100 was 7.5secs which was pretty reasonable back in 1982.

    I agree modern cars are typically more powerful, but I didnt have the benefit of power-steering, ABS, TC, ESC etc etc

    I think mods can improve the car and driver, as long as its done repsectfully, and yes there are a lot of brain-dead idiots with too much power at their disposal, but we shouldnt all be tarnished.

    The-Egg and Gareth_oau are both 100% correct in my book.
    im so sick of age being the only factor people look at... just because you see P-platers do the wrong thing dosnt mean its everyone of them!
    and in victoria P-Platers have the same speed limit and lane ristrictions as any other driver. but all drivers should keep left unless overtaking but its not only p platers that dont follow those rules... stop being so judgmental.
    funny how you only complain about P-Platers when i go for a drive i see more fully licensed drivers braking rules than anyone...
    so dont be a f*^&ing sheep and just follow everyone else judging drivers on age.

    lets go back on topic.....

    im currently with RACQ paying $120per month, told them i was 'interested' in getting car tuned (more power to engine etc)

    they said they would not cover me under basic RACQ insurance however they have a 'unique' car insurance that would cover me. They quoted me $171 per month. bit exxy if u ask me..

    I must admit here in NSW there are a lot of pretty stupid drivers ad sure you see a lot of P-platers breaking the rules but they're the ones you notice most because of the red or green P stuck on the car.... I'm also a P-plater (have had them for about 9 months) and my car is insured with NRMA and they don't even ask if my car has mods so they can't really choose not to cover me when I do mod my car haha.

    Whatever you choose to do good luck and I hope you get the car you want in the end (and insurance )

    Just because you've driven powerfull cars on L's, doesn't mean you can handle a powerfull one on yours P's.. As a l-plater I was always really cautious, especially when driving my dads V12 jag!!
    I know a mk5 TDI isn't that powerfull. but I'd say as a fellow P-plater, get used to driving for a year or two, then do mods...
    It's so easy to get cocky when driving a car, hence why there are lots of p-platers involved in crashes.. please don't be that guy.

    If you really want mods, just dump it a little and change the rims...
    As far as I know, changing anything to do with the cars performance (chips, intakes etc.) voids the insurance if involved in a crash.

    And that's why you get a mk2, coz noone knows what's original on the car and mods are required if you want it to go at all.

    im not talking stage 2 or 3 just a simple small power increase. im not the sort of person to just be a douche like that...
    im not interested in that its just i like not having floor it to get up to speed..

    im not going to lower it and put wheels on till i have alot of extra cash.

    VWGTIMK6 - how much per annum did they want with RACQ (for me would be RACV)?
