I am so disappointed with GT5; if it were a game that came out of the blue, and if there wasn't such thing as as the Granturismo series of games, then I would be loving it.
Several things annoy me:
* All modifications are too generic; ie. you can buy a "Sports ECU" for any car (even cars from the 60's and 70's, and all provide the same % in power gain, etc.) or sports catalytic converter for cars that never even had cats in the first place. Also completely lacking brake upgrades, anti roll bars, etc. ie. common things that people need.
* Unpolished game - bought a '63 skyline to compete in the classic japanese series, only had 3 speeds so it topped out at 145km/h, which wasn't enough so I spent like $7000 or whatever buying a 5 speed transmission, but the ratios were completely messed up, 5th gear topping out at 125km/h?!?!?!? The only other option was to get a fully customizable transmission for $20k. oh god.
* Clutch setup is horrible; can't shift from 1st to 2nd at the start of the race sometimes even if you purposely slow everything down, push clutch in fully, and then shift. And if you use the clutch mode the car gets stuck in the pits, etc. it's just so silly.
* Cars themselves are too generic; ie. sound the same, handle similar, etc. VTEC cars have no vtec kick/crossover, Mini Cooper S '02 has no supercharger whine (and for some reason you can still get a supercharger for it in the tuning section, and it costs 17,500 just like a supercharger for every other car), turbo sounds are crap (every turbo car has the same pssss when you shift gears)
* Missing too many cars from the last 4 years; when GT4 came out, that pretty much had had every variant of every model worth having in a game (other than ferrari/lambo, but nonetheless), but it seems like with GT5 they've picked maybe 1 or 2 models for each make from the last 4 years and said yep that'll do.
* Cockpit view missing for most cars
* Doesn't feel like a career mode anymore because of the condensed/categorised layout; takes forever to get from one menu to another - the way you acquire cars from the delivery truck is just so damn slow/annoying/unnecessary.
* Handling is still not quite up to par to many of the sims that have been released on PC in the last 5 years. Wheel characteristics are not customizable; no deadzone settings, very limited force feedback settings, etc.
* Audio is generally pretty poor other than the selection of music; often can't hear your own car, etc. surrounding cars are louder than your own, and you can't change much in that sense in the audio menu.
* AI is crap; they do not weave around and try to make a move like real humans would - they just drive in a line at the same pace, etc.
Anyway, all in all, it just seems like a slightly dumbed down version of GT4, with better graphics, slightly improved handling model, but that's about it. Definitely disappointed, especially as I had pre-ordered the signature edition thinking it was going to be an epic game/package, but it seems like most of the USD$60m budget was blown on marketing (ie. all that nonsense on the Redbull X1; fastest car on land, etc.).

John, agree with most of your complaints hey. My first foray into PS3 land, doh. Fortunately I don't have much to compare it against, but the speed at which it goes through menu's is a killer.
Has anyone here played it in 3D?? Perhaps it's a game that NEEDS 3D.
I also agree with most of the above.
Having to actually complete events to make the Used Car dealership cycle through boring gross cars (Toyota Aristo, Mitsubishi FTO, Toyota Prius (WTF?!?!?!) to name a few) is a PITA!
The prologue, though limited, felt better IIRC (cashed the prologue in a while back so can't directly compare).
Have tried it out on my 58 and while 3D is nice, still doesn't change the fact that this game is not indicitive of 5yrs development.
Share a number of John's comments, nice wrap up. But not all. Audio is fine, turn off all music in the options and sound is ok.
I see it as GT4 with nice shadow/lighting effect and a crap menu system. I don't know if more races unlock as you get up in ranks but it seems really small.
I would also have liked them to bring in a Forza style ranking system for the cars. D, C, B etc class. I mean making a race restricted to "Japan" but not having the AI adjust to what car you have is crap. You could be using a GTR against an MX5. The Forza system made for much better parity racing.
I took a week off work for GT4 and barely did anything else. In the past week of having GT5, I've struggled to sit there for more than a couple hours at a time.
Just picked up a mkIV R32. Sounds like crap!!!
Anyone who has driven one in forza3 will know how sweet it CAN sound in a game (not far off the real thing) the GT5 version is rubbish. Yet another disappointment!!!
