I read about this issue at least 6 weeks ago on vortex but now it is apparently in our local media.
Rough idleling and stalling due to ECU:

Engine problems for Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ

The remedy is a replacement ECU if it is over 100km old.

    wierd
Toyota says the problem is not mechanical, and that the ECU’s software will need to be re-mapped (or “re-flashed” in car jargon) if it has less than 100 miles on the clock. It says that if the odometer reading is higher, the ECU should be replaced.
So some ECU hardware fails once the car has gone beyond 100kms hmm I am thinking not. Probably just some adaption type of issue that they will limit with an upgrade. At least remapping these things is quite quick and easy

Yeah, the way I read it was that the ECU will adapt to how you drive and then after 100km will no longer adapt and if driven outside of the parameters (say if you baby it for the first 100km and then thrash it) it will fail to adjust and cause the engine to stall.

How do you compare these two different cars? It'll be like comparing a Range Rover Vogue to a Mazda CX-5

Unfortunately for Subaru they entered in a joint project with Toyota. I saw yet another headline a few days ago about 300,000 more Toyota's recalled worldwide. They are just like Mercedes at the moment - Lost in the woods because penny pinching when it comes to quality production and testing. It always comes back to bite 10 fold. Shame.

    resurrecting old thread.

    interesting comparison between the R dsg with bluefin stage 1, h&r springs on advan ad08r 235 40 18 and a few other minor mods (180kw atw & 1480kg plus driver) and stock 86 on hankook rs3 215 45 17o nly (100kw atw & 1275kg plus driver).

my conclusion: if you want to go fast in a secure way, choose the R. if you want have some play (with ESC fully turned off) and go outside the comfort zone (it felt insecure at first), choose the 86
