"You have to be going at a pretty serious lick to extract the traction control off, tail-out drifting fun available. Track performance is largely irrelevant, because you have the full width of the road at your disposal and know that nothing’s going to be coming the other way. But on the road, you don’t, which restricts drifting diversions to corners you can see through."
This statement is arse about. The only place you can drift the FT86/BRZ is on the race-track/skin-pan. I agreed with all the comments made on the FT86/BRZ in terms of chassis adjustability, the coupes are that competent in the area of handling, but the journos are missing the point in that tail-out antics on the street is a big no no. Fast lap times are boring. The fun is organising 3-4 skin pan drive days and having some fun in the wet in a closed environment. Other than that, the FT86/BRZ are hugely capable vehicles as day to day work horses. Bearing what EVO and CAR mags state, our own local journos in MOTOR mag rate the Toyota and Subaru FT86/BRZ as 1st and 2nd place for driver enjoyment.
    Cheers.

Edit - WJ, it is "skid pan" not "skin pan" unless you are talking about something you do with a female

You are being discriminatory .. WJ may like Skin panning blokes.. so pull ya head in!

    WJ,

Jokes aside, the reality is the hype is starting to fade and the reality is starting to present. I have always said it is an underpowered unit, you will have to wave the flag very hard in support/defense for all its other attributes. My guess is once they get the right go fast bits bolted on it will be hard to match. The problem here is you are wrestling with insurance and warranty and resale. To bring back the comparison conversation which is moot in my mind you can get this all ouf the box for the price of a well optioned GTI

Jokes aside, the sort of person rejoicing at the thought of the fun a cheap, light, rwd, ground-up sports car can provide wouldn't think twice about a Golf GTI.

The moment you attempt to downplay the 86 citing a lack of power, is the same moment you ought to move on to glorified fwd hatch's with bigger numbers on paper. They are perfectly suited to you.

The GTI is glorified for good reason

A jack of all trades and with a few minor mods, master of many

A nice place to be on a daily basis with quality interior and ageless styling

I've said before I like a lot about the 86, mostly the styling but it falls short of the GTI in too many areas to be a competitor.

    It's all been said before.

Congrats! Although I'd hope there would be at least a few of us interested in a more driver-focussed offering from VAG. There isn't much to offer at the moment.
