I understand you would defend an 86, you bought one. I used to own a GTI but I don't defend it (as my run in with GTI owners/zealots as mentioned buy SF will attest).

Comparing a GTI and an 86 is well, just weird, to those of us that don't have a vested interest.

Defensive? I just paid 35k for a car that dealers are being offered 10k over the list price every day and are listed as USED CAR's for over 50k... I know which position I'd rather be in... there is only one set of definsive owners here and they all seem to either own a GTI or an R.. I could easily bail with a profit on my 86 and buy a Mk6 GTI... or a used R for that matter.. but I have no plans to. anyway guys.. you seem to take it all so personally when people compare the two cars.. when I made the comparison I didn't have an invested interest because I hadn't made a decision.. I don't need to defend my decision to buy the 86 over the GTI at all.. I'm not trying to argue with you guys, like I keep saying Golfs are great cars.. but the fact is, there will be people who toss up whether to buy a GTI or an 86GTS... so therefore, no matter which wheels are being driven or how many doors the cars have, it's a fair and reasonable comparison.

By pointing out how Wheels run their COTY? If you're running an award where there is a single winner over a diverse range of products, comparing like with like (in this case criteria such as intended purpose) is much more sensible. You see otherwise you end up with the debate in this topic about 86 vs GTI. Wheels compare GTI to criteria and 86 to criteria and work out which one 'scores' better. Or to give a better disparity, how about Golf vs Mercedes S-Class?

So they aren't similar but if you use criteria they are.

    OK.

Yes I appreciate the challenge.. but after all said and done.. you think the paperwork scoring for this criteria spat out the CRZ against all others.. and next year the COTY with be the FT86... I am not sure that Wheels carries much prestige anymore regardless of thier formula.

Maybe I should write a comparison between my GTI with my previous car, a Nissan Navara D40 STX. Hey, they both have four wheels and an engine, right? The Navara would win because there's no way the GTI could make it to the top of Fraser Island.*

Yeah, it sounds like a great performer to me (NOT), sports car with the 205Nm@6,600 rpm.
I wonder, what the performance would be like on some hilly roads and with the 2-3 passengers with a bit of luggage ?

I guess, we just have to wait untill some time pass, to see if it was successfull car or not?

^ I don't think you'd have any more than 2 passengers ... not unless they are under 7 years of age or short men that are amputee's as there's not room a person legs in the rear. Suprisingly ... the FT86/BRZ is quite drivable in the lower rev range, but yes, you do need to keep the revs up for fast motion uphills, requiring some foresight. I guess it more about the nature of performance, than quantity. I like the fact that it does rev out up to 7500 rpm and that the powerband is very linear. The boxer does have remnants of the std Liberty/Imreza boxer motor down low, only much more flexibility with the Toyota sourced direct injection & port injection (VW really needs this to prevent carbon build-up on valves & port inlets). Speaking of far out comparisons, have a look at this comparison between new & old. Back in the old days, they could have so stiff suspension due to less rigid chassis causing more flex. Best to stick with the new. On another note, the base model Toyota FT86 GT Coupe is more abundant for those not wanting to wait too long for their Coupe:

Maybe because they are both cars that appeal to drivers who really enjoy a good drive - one carries more passengers more easily while the other simply is a better drive. So what do you want - the cargo hauler or the best drive? (plus probably better resale, cheaper servicing and Jap reliability)
