I don't care what gets compared to what but comparing a turbo FWD euro 5 door to a NA RWD Jap 2 door is a little strange but whatever floats your boat
Almost all on here tune their GTIs which puts them well ahead of the 86 in terms of power and usable torque

I personally think the 86 looks far sexier than the GTI and my R but I didn't buy my R based on its looks.

    Whatever floats your boat

However, the constant boring monologue from one poster gets tedious. Sure, I don't have to read it and I have now used the Ignore function to make that happen automatically
I couldn't agree more with that. Just look at specs. (power and torque) and I'm surprised that anyone wants to compare the two.

How is it not fair to compare an 86GTS with a 3 door GTI? They have fairly equal performance, both 2 doors, similar money... if you are so adoment that it shouldn't be compared with the GTI.. what car should the 86 be compared to?

I really believe you guys are over sensitive about your own cars.. it's like you guys are trying to snob the car with 'how dare they compare a Toyota with my GTI'... and even more offended when the critics say 86 is a better car.. like I keep saying, I am not saying the 86 is a better car than the GTI... but it's a worthy competitor... I had the opportunity to buy a White GOLF R for 38k... I paid more for my 86GTS... and I don't regret it at all : )
I don't see anyone being defensive about VW or the Golf in particular, just confusion about the comparison between a fish and a mouse or cat and a donkey. There isn't one to be had.. No one is calling the FT86 rubbish however if I go back through all the posts there is more slander towards the R and GTI by the believers.

But as for COTY, it's not to be better than another car but to be best matched to the Wheels COTY criteria.
I think you helped me make my point about credability

Yes, all the others are building cars to compete with the gti, using the gti as the benchmark car. GTI owners should be proud they own the benchmark car.

By pointing out how Wheels run their COTY? If you're running an award where there is a single winner over a diverse range of products, comparing like with like (in this case criteria such as intended purpose) is much more sensible. You see otherwise you end up with the debate in this topic about 86 vs GTI. Wheels compare GTI to criteria and 86 to criteria and work out which one 'scores' better. Or to give a better disparity, how about Golf vs Mercedes S-Class?

Yes I appreciate the challenge.. but after all said and done.. you think the paperwork scoring for this criteria spat out the CRZ against all others.. and next year the COTY with be the FT86... I am not sure that Wheels carries much prestige anymore regardless of thier formula.

Maybe because they are both cars that appeal to drivers who really enjoy a good drive - one carries more passengers more easily while the other simply is a better drive. So what do you want - the cargo hauler or the best drive? (plus probably better resale, cheaper servicing and Jap reliability)

I'm not going to argue what is a better drive but I want to enjoy that drive under many conditions, not just on the race track and on the flat roads with no traffic, with me only in the car and turning the aircon off while driving up the hill when the traffic infront of me slows down.

As I said, the time will tell.
