Well I for 1 have finally found the answer to what seems to be all of our collective problems as discussed ad nauseam above .... A VW on sale today with:
- a petrol turbo (that can even easily be tuned for more power),
- that is RWD,
- with a 6speed manual, and
- a VW quality interior
AND as a bonus it has space for some bicycles or other goodies, it can even tow stuff,
BUT as a bit of a downer .... its a ute, an Amarok TSI to be precise ...
Everywhere that a speed limit applies (which is pretty much everywhere last time I checked) they will be equally quick .... on a drag strip I'd bet on my tuned Amarok and I concede that for the 0.1% of its life that I do go to track days it will lose to the 86/BRZ ....
Why people go on about a car with no detectable torque that can really only be used to some effect on a racetrack is beyond me,
as a daily driver even an Amarok beats the 86/BRZ ....![]()

Seriously I don't understand what is all with the hype around the 86 and brz. To white James: the fact is golf gti mk6 is faster car either from digg/roll or in any race track. You can check it yourself in fastestlap. Com. For most of us we spend most of our time on the road, and it is way easier to extract driving pleasure through performance rather than handling. Think about it this way. Would you corner in 90 degrees bend on the street at 120km/hours???????? Or is easier to reach 120km/hours in a quite street with your gti or an r. And if you planning to drive around the twisted such as rnp fast but maintain the safe manner there are no different in between gti/r/86 etc etc. And for some who goes on a track day, the gti and r will clearly beat the 86.
Have you seen the evo reviewer test the brz against megane and the megane beats in the track by 5 secs and also more fun to drive.
so what is the argument for.......? Gti and r is quicker on the drag strip and on the track and also it has a better interior, more practical, etc ctc. And in term of price... Please don't mention it... All I can say good luck haggling with the dealers. You'll be looking close to 40k for gts which is the same as mk 6gti. If fun is what you after, get yourself a second hand dc2r and strip it up/old mx5.

Differences between handling packages of the BRZ -v- FT86 coupes?

Two very different cars with very different markets. Don't really see the cross over other than both being entry level "performance" cars.
Agree.... Can't compare these two cars together, they are targeted for a completely different market. But I dont agree that GTI/R is not fun to drive in our normal street. If I dare to say, the Golf R/GTI is more fun to drive than the 86, due to the fact the turbo power gives you that g-forces that you will never get in the Ft86, and the GTI/R can corner as quick and as much fun in the street at the legal speed limit (FOR STREET NOT RACE TRACK)
500 x 100 max size on sig pics please!!
im over here in japan at the moment, and i get what these cars (the toyobarus) are all about - you can really sense that these cars were designed by their makers to be the next japanese lightweight driver focussed hero car, not right out of the box like a renaultsport would be, but rather as a completely blank canvas to start building upon.
went into autobacs yesterday, and the amount of stuff they have for these cars, tuning wise, is insane, especially for the handling side of things.
these cars were designed for driving enthusiasts to have fun on japanese mountain touge. sure, they:re not going to be as fast in a straight line as a v8 bogunwagen, but when it comes to tuned cars set up for street use, im sure that a suspension fettled toyobaru would obliterate any huge horsepower 2 tonne falcodore on the roads that the toyobaru was designed to be driven on.
