Yes that's true. That's a fair way off the beaten track, Ada,I have only been to Monowai, I'd get lost in the bush otherwise. Those photos must have been a while back, as people are using Helicopters more often now.
Did you work for the Pest Destruction Board or Conservation?.
Oh Rabbits, Quail and Goats, I shoot what I eat, is my policy, I'm not a fan of venison.

They were taken about 1965 and were right at the start of the helicopter shooting

In fact we were on our way up past the Sutherland Falls one day after a herd of deer we had seen up the valley when we heard Thwack thwack and a Hiller 12b went over next we heard an FN on Auto so we just turned around and went home. Choppers ruined ground shooting over there.

I worked for the Tourist Hotel Corporation as a Trackhand and Guide on the Milford walking track from 1962 -1967.

Lake Ada has the walking track right beside it and we used to run a Hamilton Jet boat upit and the river to Boatshed to supply the food for 50 people every day. Then 6 packhorses carried it 5 more miles up to the hut in the pic

No Rabbits, Goats or Quail over there.

Milford track used to be good, 30-40 yrs ago but too commercial now

Have done most of them (Sth Island was my territory)

R&D for a local company. Got to see places the public never will.

    Those were good days

I love NZ, been there three times now on holidays- once in summer, twice in winter.

I was there in August last year - we had a day in CHCH after driving back from the west coast (QT, Franz Joseph, Greymouth then across via Arthur's Pass). It was bucketing rain by the time we got to Christchurch, we went through the tunnel to Lyttelton and then drove back around the bay to Sumner hoping to get up to the top for a view, but it was closed off due to the rain & localised flooding. It was heartbreaking seeing the damage from the quakes - they still had shipping containers stacked on the side of the main road in case of further land slides
