    FTA with USA and Tyres?

Hi all, does anyone know what the deal is with the Free Trade Agreement between the USA and Australia in relation to Tyres being purchased that are made in the USA and over the $1K customs duties and GST limit?

can get Michelin PS2 locally for the same price as Pilot Super Sports shipped from Tire rack. But because it's over the $1k limit ie: $1150 from memory, the price would obviously be more if I had to pay GST and taxes etc?

    Thanks.

FTA does not have anything to do with custom and gst payable on any personal imports / a single shipment of items costing equivalent > AU$1,000.
The threshold however excludes the shipping costs.

So if the Michelin PSS set costs equivalent to AU$990, plus shipping of US$350, you shouldn't get charged GST and custom.

To the best of my knowledge:

Tyres normally attract a 5% duty rate, but countries subject to bilateral, regional or special trade agreements with Australia may attract different duty rates.

Tyres made in the US attract of duty rate of 0% (free). Same goes for tyres made in Thailand. Not sure what the rates are for the other relevant countries.

Tyres made in a country with no trade agreement but purchased in the US will still attract the usual duty rate.

Duty and GST are not payable for goods valued at AUD 1000 or below (excluding shipping costs).

For goods valued over AUD 1000, duty (where applicable) is calculated from the value of goods. Then 10% GST is calculated from the combined value of goods, duty & shipping.
