    freebies!!!!

    hey all,

appears some p plater has busted up his SEAT cordoba (tipping its a 94-96 model as its got all the same bits as my 95 toledo) beyond repair as its been abandoned by the looks (altho the licence plates are still on it).
its about 50metres from my house with the front end completely pushed in..looks like hes hit a telegraph pole). theres a window down and all the doors are unlocked. looks like someone has taken the stereo(tipping the owner took it as theres all heaps good insulated cabling running under the seats to the boot).

anyways, i just "borrowed" a relay out of it and hey presto!!!! my aircon works for the first time ever (bloody freezing!! ).

just wondering if theres anything else i should borrow out of it.. was thinking all the switches.. and the centre console part..(it looks in better nick than mine)

its been there for about 5 days now with no sign of movement. im awaiting the green sticker of death(council will take in 7 days if not off the street)

    any suggestions?

ps: does this model have a switch for the boot? or is it only key entry like my tolley?

mate i would just be careful you could get done for stealing if a cop comes along while you are "borrowing" something even though the owner might have just left it. I would find out whose it is and offer them a small amount of cash or something to get a receipt for ownership so you wont have any legal issues.

    This is wise.

If you get caught with parts from that car its up to you to prove they aren't stolen. (receipts are important here)

I was in a police station recently while a woman was struggling to explain that her boat was not stolen property (bought it with cash) despite not having a receipt.

perhaps leave a note with my number on it in the car?

ps: once that council sticker goes on it.. does that change ownership or anything? or if the owner comes and takes the plates?

I'd guess that the registration sticker plays a part as well..if you could find the owner somehow, and get into contact with them asking if you could have or buy the car for a small amount, he should just de-register it from insurances and the RTA and then I'm sure you could tow it onto your property with no trouble..

At no stage does an abandoned car become public property or a free-for-all for parts. Be careful.

I'd give the local council a ring and find out what their procedure is.

You might be able to pick up the wreck cheap at a local auction house.

I think at some point the ownership of the car transfers from the vehicle owner to the council by some legality which allows them to sell it off.

Yup the council end up with the bill for having to dispose of it.

Probably ring them and see what their proceedure is.

Personally I reckon its urban scavenging and once the sticker is on the car, all bets are of.

However, the law is more boring than this, so be carefull.
