Obviously VWA/VGA are ultimately responsible, but to suggest the Fairfax media machine are the heroes now and are not to blame is ludicrous. For years they gave VW cars all sorts of car of the year awards and recommending them as best in class. Even during last week in the midst of the media blitz they recommended the golf as the best small hatch, although conditionally. I know many, many, many who purchased a VW based on those recommendations. So sorry but they are at least partly to blame and it is understandable that most who are saying that the media are not to blame are those with major issues. Spare a thought for the vast majority who do not have issues. The media may get VWA to recall for all those with issues but it will also significantly decrease resale for those with no issues and personally I am not happy with that. Sad to see VW owners (with issues or not) having absolutely no regard for those who do not have issues. TBH when that happens the reputation of VW in this country will soon be up you know where (if not already there), yet those same people are suggesting this will all blow over and that VWs are still desirable. Crap! Read the forums and I think you will find otherwise. I know many who were planning on buying a new VW have now changed their minds (must be ten times worse for second hand). For now, the biggest losers in all this are the vast majority without any issues whatsoever!

There are many, many, many, many who would not agree with what you say.

EDIT I'll spare a thought for the poor "vast majority without any issues whatsoever"!!

Another one who cares little. But if you are correct. No wait, take a second to think about! Ok? So if you are correct this forum will serve very little purpose in the future as there will be no VW owners who actually enjoy their car. The only threads will be titled 'how do i get this death trap sold' and/or 'how do i get this death trap fixed'. As VW owners we should be able to discuss how to resovle the problems without shooting the whole brand and every vehicle into crap (which is separate from how VW has behaved), but that is of no concern to you. When it gets this bad perhaps it is time to go with it and sell, because who knows what!

    Hi people..
I have been following this thread quite closely as a potential future VW customer.
It doesnt look good and I'm thinking twice about my options.
Just wanted to find out, so has the problem actually been fixed at all?
I mean, is there even a fix? some kind of modification to fix the issues with the DSG? and the 118TSI engine issues?
Perhaps to make them more reliable? And what kind of modifications are there and if there were, when was this applied to the cars?
What I really wanted to know was, whats the whole point of all this crazy debate only to find out that there is no actual fix?

Yes. There is a simple solution.

Don't buy a DSG or a car fitted with the 118 engine.
    Audi S3. Sold
    Golf R. Sold
    Citroen DS3 Dsport. Sold
    2016 Skoda Octavia RS Wagon.

Good question Joe! No point, because I don't think anyone here can answer your questions. When VWA make a recall, assuming they do and even if they do don't assume you will get a proper answer to all, you may get some answers. All this debate has done is confused people including many owners, potential customers and it even seems like the seasoned enthusiasts don't to know 100% what is going on. What is certain is that sales of new VWs will go down and resale of second hand will go down even more!

Perceptions of the brand are not good.
Look at it from the perspective of a non-VW owner, looking to buy in the second hand market. If the car is out of warranty, there are two scenarios.
One he drives off and some short time later, finds an envelope in the glove box. It reads "congratulations your car is fine hope you are satisfied".
But some people get a different letter, which reads "DSG is faulty please replace at exorbitant out of pocket cost".

People just won't stand for that.
VW has to go into serious damage control here - that means refunding owners and previous owners, the full cost of the transmission replacement. There is no other way, full stop.
People not familiar with the brand will believe all VW cars are the same. It has happened many times before with different car brands.
