What happens when you're in gear, in a manual VW Golf, and the engine shuts down? Coasting, or engine braking?

Coasting would not slow you down at a significant rate that someone behind could not avoid you if they were paying due care and attention.
It actually takes a fair amount of time to slow a car down from 100km/h without using the brakes.

The simple fact of the matter needs to be broken down into 2 factor.

1) that the physics that would cause a car to go from 100-0 in 3 seconds, as is claimed in the reporting of the case before the coroner is simply not achievable. No matter what the driver behind has an obligation to be driving with due care and attention. The truck driver obviously wasn't. This car was also a manual and a diesel. Therefore the issue has nothing, I repeat nothing, to do with false neutrals.

if brakes are used it might be impossible for a golf but its not impossible, plenty of cars will brake under 3 secs once they have 5 zeros behind the first digit.

But herein lies the dilemma...

How do you alert the person behind you that you are coming to a stop? Most likely, in a panic at such an unexpected turn of events, you would hit the brakes to light up the brake lights.

It certainly wouldn't be intuitive to keep your foot in the air and punch the hazard light button. (I'll need to practice that...)
