I believe the safest and best option for both sides (VWA and consumers) is that VW announce an extended driveline warranty (engine, box, clutch, DSG) for 10 years exactly like China...that at least would remove the need for a recall but adds stability and confidence back into the brand / second hand VW's.

That's a TDI? If so, then if it has a dsg gearbox its the wet clutch 6 speed unit. The one that is causing all the grief and the recalls is the dry clutch 7 speed unit most commonly found here in 1.2 and 1.4L petrol VW etc.

So instead of a 7 speed Passat they say use a 7 speed Touran? is there more than one model of the 7speed DSG?

Finally, a $15,000,000 fine for misleading the public and putting all owners of vehicles with the dq200 in (greater than usual on the roads) harms way.
An overly ambitious lawyer with German connections in high places might consider going after Volkswagen AG itself, who last year made an after tax profit of EUR 22 billion, so even 0.01% of that roughly equates to an amount of EUR 222 million (AUD 300 million).

There's a retirement plan right there, albeit a little risky.

I'm not 100% sure, but here are my estimates if purchased from an Australian VW dealer (parts only, excluding fitting):

The mechatronics unit would probably cost about $4,500.
The clutch pack would probably cost about $2,000.

As Hail said, the transmission warranty is now 5 years or 150 000 km (whichever you reach first) from the vehicle's delivery date, but best to confirm with VW.

That my friend, is a 103 TDI common-rail engine with a DPF (CBAB) attached to a DQ250 6-speed DSG transmission (LQV).

Although the DQ250 6-speed DSG transmission isn't trouble-free (earlier units often needed a replacement mechatronics unit under warranty, which costs about $4,000), it is not the DSG transmission in question that is currently subject to a recall in several countries - that would be the DQ200 7-speed DSG transmission.

No idea what the Sharan uses, but there is a 7 speed wet clutch DSG, used in the TDI Tiguan.

The fact that you have a Mk6 Golf (5K1) lessens the likelihood of there being a dud mechatronics unit, but unless one has a crystal ball, one can never say for certain.

If your car is still acting up, and if the fault lies with the mech unit, and if your car is less than 5 years old from its delivery date, you might still be in with a chance of getting it replaced under warranty:

That is, assuming that your car is covered by the 5 year / 150 000 km transmission warranty. Best to confirm with VW.

Having said that, I'd waste no time in selling it as soon as it's practicable if it's causing you such angst, or you feel that it will cause you such angst in the near future - you don't need this in your life.

From what I can tell, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Free extended warranty only applies to 2013+ model cars. Doesn't really help me out with a MY11 that's still under warranty
