The Internet seems to be firing up over this issue. To add my 2c, the missus had this exact problem in the toerag. Stopped, inexplicably, punt road, peak hour, 38 degrees, baby and kid in the back. She was massively pissed. Fortunately our mechanic was able to fix the problem by draining the petrol from the recently filled tank and replacing it with diesel fuel which is what the engine requires to run

The cars made today are more reliable and safer than the cars made 20 or more years ago. If you are old enough and remember? How many automatic transmissions didn't need rebuild before they reached 150,000km? The cars were stopping on the road not just because of the transmissions but also with the failed fuel pumps, ECUs, crank angle sensors, ignition modules etc.

Just ask any mechanical shop that's around for long enough.

There's plenty to suggest that VW's still do all that today, and more. I'm sure the transmission shops will vouch for that.

But at least it doesn't stop the car dead in its tracks. Oh wait...



On a more serious note, a car stopping due to a mechanical fault isn't that unusual per se, but to what extent this contributed to the death of Ms Ryan is the big question - but we won't know that until the coroner hands down the finding in July.

If in this instance the car is found to be at fault and the relevant components identified, then I don't doubt that VW will announce a safety recall (voluntary or otherwise) for the affected models.

But on the issue of the DSG recall, I wouldn't hold my breath.

So, ummm, I've done 85,000kms in just over 2 years and the worst issue I've had is a slight squeak from the door seal.

Just sayin'.

The level of complaints (in general) on this forum alone would suggest that not everyone is/was as fortunate as you.

VW must have not paid the advertising bill on time, or given them not enough cash after a review... Front page again. Its funny how his car experienced the problems on a railway crossing out of all the possible places on earth...

Now the golf is the most reliable hatch. Personally I would not trust anything these guys say, and perhaps it does not matter anyway, but I bet, from their perspective, it has had the intended effect. This thread is part of that effect.

I haven't had any major issues with my Golf yet. I have a 2007 Golf 2.0 TDi with DSG. I purchased the car as a demo from Orange with about 3000 Kms on it and it now has 301000 kms. I recently replaced all shocks, it had a fuel pump replaced last year, brake rotors the year before. When the car had about 15000 km on it there was a stalling issue, only when being started but never while driving. The dealer flashed the computer and it was fixed. Other then that, the vehicle has performed perfectly. I always get it serviced at a VW dealership in Penrith and always get everything that needs doing, done. I also opt for the 'on engine' injector cleaning service. It has chewed through 3 batteries but that may have been caused by myself changing out the stereo and the battery drain issue this can cause.
I am concerned about any possible issues of engine shutdown while driving but after 300,000 kms I have seen any problems.
Can anyone that has had these issues say at what KM it happened at?
