    DSG driving advice

    Hi guys,

    I just recently purchased a 2014 VW SCIROCCO DSG model. I am very happy with the purchase and love the car ! I am only 24 years old so have a thrill for fast driving so was just wondering the best way to drive the DSG without any problems happening to the engine/gearbox. I was in sports mode yesterday and gave it a hit, it redlined and took a second or two to automatically change gears while still redlining. I got a bit scared with the possibility the gearbox might go blow or something. Is this normal? I do however change my driving styles owning on my moods.

    Any advice/tips would be helpful !

    Thats normal as far as I know, mine does the same...enjoy!

    Seems a bit rough to have to drive a car a particular way to save a possible problem with the auto or clutchless manual as some describe the DSG . Some time back VW told a taxi company in Europe NOT to buy their cars equipped with the DSG as they were not suitable for that type of driving . So is the DSG not suitable for city driving because it seems that there are many people who have posted about the stop start thing on the road . Maybe VW should forget these high tech nightmares and make a auto that CAN be driven under ALL circumstances . I might be getting old but I still like to think of myself as a practical person who can see problems .

    I havent had any trouble with either car. The wet clutch 6spd is the better box.
    One must realise that they are as you say manual boxes with clutches just like in the old days. If you hold one of them on a slope slipping the clutch you wil burn it out eventually. Likewise if you creep in traffic with the 7spd dry clutch box you risk doing the same.

    We sit and dont move and dont creep up with the foot gently on the brake.

    Stop, stay stopped Go.

    The stop start just needs to be got used to. If you dont want the engine to stop just lift left foot slightly and it will come on or if you brake gradually and lightly it wont stop. Its when you roar up to a stop and have to brake hard it will shut off.
    I try and anticipate the lights and lift off the brakes a bit to start the engine in time.

    Dont know what all the fuss is about really.

    Make sure your dsg has female ecu, otherwise it cant handle 2 clutches at simultaneously well and hence requires specific driving style. you can check with vcds.

    I do love the DSG box, love the way it behaves most of the time and the technology behind it - VW should be commended for the work it has put in to developing it (if not there shoddy treatment of Australian consumers in particular when it goes wrong) as arguably the best on market.

    However the ongoing question marks, the impact on reputation/resale, and costs involved do make me wonder why the latest ZF boxes cannot be utilised in more applications especially when the general consensus amongst motoring journalists are that the latest versions are every bit as good as having a dual clutcher anyway.

    Regardless it won't stop me acquiring a DQ500 in my next purchase; although the ZF might get a look in too. We'll see. The Speaker may have something to say..

    One big no-no is to have it in Drive with your foot off the brake and held stationary with just the hand brake. The exception is if using the hill hold or hill start feature. The reason is that within 1/4 second of taking your foot off the brake, the 1st gear (or reverse gear) clutch starts to engage. So, if you have the handbrake set and your foot off the brake, the clutch will keep trying to engage and eventually burn out.

    The thing about the hill hold feature is that the car must be on a certain minimum slope. You can tell if this feature is active by "pumping" the foot brake. It it goes rock hard, then the feature is triggered.

    Remember. the DSG is a manual gearbox that is operated automatically, and not an "automatic" gearbox.
