I enjoy driving my cars. Nothing will change that.

Autonomous cars are coming, that's just (sad) reality. I hope the future of motoring isn't 100% autonomous cars, would prefer instead to see an old el paso ad solution "Why don't we have both?"

We are a long way off.

Strap your self in because I'm about to go full conspiracy theorist.

Full autonomous self driving cars will be highly regulated because of who is liable. The manufacturer will end up being liable for accidents and because of this my prediction is that we will never be able to personally own a self driving car. Instead of ownership you will subscribe to a monthly service which includes everything like insurance, fuel, maintenance. Most people will use a shared car service that is on a schedule or on demand, other options include coffee, snacks and turning off advertisements.

Only very well off people will have a non-shared car but they still won't own it. It will drive away at night for it's daily charge.

Sounds a bit like the very first electric cars in the US , they would not let people actually own them outright so after the initial excitment of battery cars seemed to die the car makers bought all the car s back and destroyed them .

Only a small point and I get your main thrust of argument but if the OEM accepts liability for accidents and damage then the owner will not have to hold insurance. At this stage of the evolution of the motor car it is a game person who tries to forecast what is going to happen to vehicle ownership and how we utilise cars for personal use.

I don't think its conspiracy theorist, but the concept of owning your own car, that likely sits somewhere the majority of the day like most do is wasteful. I think those days are going and as they should. Autonomous vehicles don't have to be on roads, they could be on demand mini trams or trains. Or in dedicated lanes/roads. I love my cars and love driving, but when I was i London recently, I didn't miss driving in that traffic one bit when I could take the tube and get places very fast. I had a huge new E class merc on the drive around the rest of England including London and given the option would have taken a train everywhere with the speed and less stress even when they get crowded it still beats heavy traffic.

If you had the option to request a vehicle anywhere you went when you needed it at the cost of not having something sit and depreciate and lie idle all night and most of the day, including getting a more fun one when needed, or a larger one etc why would anyone want to sit owning the same thing ever again.

If I have the option of sitting down in a car or train or driving the same car in metro traffic I prefer to not drive. Given the same option outside the metro area I will always drive. I won't see it but the on demand use of cars instead of ownership will reduce traffic congestion and make the metro area a far nicer place to be. A similar thing happened when cars were first introduced as it removed horses from the road and all the problems that went with them.

I think if even just the autonomy was limited to them moving between "bookings" then that would make a massive difference in traffic. If you think about the amount of downtime most cars have every day it really seems dumb the way we use them here. Shared car schemes are good, but are limited by the types and the locations for them. I really don't see why everyone in inner city terrace house with no off street parking need a mouldy looking car buried under leaves outside their place for the odd trip to ikea and it would be a good place to start with people in those areas holding onto the old bombs to use on a rainy day.
