In the press, VW are talking about post 2009 models being affected. I inserted the VIN no of our 2009 Tiguan TDI in the link & it said it wasn't affected. Maybe at around that time a tighter emission standard for Australian sold cars came in.
Hi
Looks like VW Australia has setup a website for owners to check if their vehicles are affected by the emissions issue. You just need to enter the VIN of your car to check.

jets, that is interesting as my 2010 Tiguan is affected...I would check again if I were you just to be sure. Anyway, that result was expected, but right now I have NO intention of returning my car to VW as part of this recall.

I am thinking that your Tiguan could be Euro 4 as Euro 5 emission regulations came into effect in Europe from September 2009 (Australia September 2013). Depends when your car was built, that may be the reason your Tiguan is not affected. Euro 4 and Euro 6 cars are not affected by the emissions issue. My Tiguan is affected and was built in December 2014 (3 months after Euro 6 regulations were introduced) but for us in Oz we were given the 130kw (EA189) engine rather than the updated 135kw (EA28 which Tiguans around the world now have. Also had a read in the German newspaper today VW announced that it would start recalling cars from January 2016 since the software needs to be developed and tested first. Pretty much sit and wait I guess

Same here arcadelt, the car will never be the same again after what I have been reading once the software is updated. Less power and torque and higher fuel consumption. Defeats the purpose of buying a diesel engine.

The way I read this table from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, my November built 2010 Tiguan was suppose to adhere to Euro 4 emission standards in Australia at time of manufacture. Given a weight of 1610kg it is a Category N Class II car so was and remains allowed to emit 0.33g/km of NOx. Has anyone read exactly how much NOx "cheating" EA 189 engines are actually emitting?

So, answering my own question, if car A and B are the two VWs (car C is likely to be the BMW) that the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines & Emissions at West Virginia University were testing, then the emissions well an truly exceed Euro 4 standards, and even Euro 3 under some scenarios.

From what I've seen is that current limit is set at 0.180g/km for Euro 5 engines, they appear to be emitting 0.800g/km according to the test. Problem being is that factories test their cars on rollers inside under perfect driving conditions which on the road you will never achieve. Even inclines will increase fuel consumption by a large amount and this will cause the engine to emit more CO2 and NOx. I don't think anyone is able to achieve what is set in the regulations. US regulations are lot tougher than the ones in Europe (0.180g/km) for NOx. Pretty sure that other manufacturers have a similar issues. If anyone really would like to see how people stick to US regulations, search for "Coal Rollers" on YouTube.
