And now, we have the plastic sump with a plastic plug (rubber washer).

A solution to a non existent problem. Good thing plastic sumps are more durable :O

Although I see the benefits of a metal sump with plastic plug.

My old car had a rubber washer (metal plug), IMO better than crush washer.

I happened to have my washers out, so I thought I'd check the sizing on a selection of various different ones.
They all seem to have an ID of 14.4mm and an OD of 19.9mm. That should a guide for you Johnbu when buying more.
Recently I bought some aluminium ones from a Euro service specialist in Richmond (Melbourne).

    Thanks, good to know.

Which place was it and how much did they charge you? I may pick it up rather than ordering them online if not too expensive.

Also, Is it better to buy OEM Oil Filter or Ryco (Z794 I think)

OEM over Ryco any day of the week.

Will most likely be cheaper too.

Run Auto Parts also sell Mann oil filters at a competitive price. Mann is one of the suppliers who manufacture the OEM oil filter for VW Group.

I've now gone back to OEM sump plug.

Used the ECS sump plug for a couple of years, changed the oil last week and used a new washer ECS provided (found them) and leaks overnight.

After hand tightening the plug I could tighten with a rachet without much torque but even after 1/2 a turn it never felt very tight, almost like it was stripping the pan. Not a good feeling.

Switched to the OEM plug today and after hand tightening it, it was very tight after a 1/6th of a turn. Felt much more reassuring.

Anyway will only use a new OEM plug for every oil change from now.

Maybe the ECS plug was overtightened once before, maybe it wasn't. It's in the bin now. I had an iffy feeling about it from day one due to the brass washer (definately not copper).

For years now, I use a torque wrench for the sump plug & the plastic cover [on mime] on top of the oil filter. My sump plug doesn't leak & the oil filter cover is not too tight to remove. I wouldn't bother fitting a magnetic drain plug.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
