the engines were capable of producing over 1500hp, but they were qualifying specials - ie they would only last enough time to do a warm up lap, a qualifying quickie and a cool down lap before they were screwed

I took this pic at the BMW museum at Spartenburg, in South Carolina. It was funny, looking at the block, seeing where the the old alternator mounts and other stuff from the stock 2002 1.6L had been machined off... What alot of people don't realise is that these blocks had done at least 100,000km in a normal BMW 2002 road car before they were made into a fire breathing monster... This is why they are classed as the most powerful production car engine ever produced.
