Is it some type of method to test the suspension etc etc..
People who say the Cayman is a poor man's 911 haven't driven one. You don't even need to get an "S", beautifully balanced, amazing engine, and awesome brakes. Even looking in the rear view mirrors and seeing those two "hips" is pure horn.
The last time I drove a Cayman, I needed to see a plastic surgeon to get the smile off my face....

It's Porsche's Weissach skidpad in the mid-1970s, you're spot on about it being used to develop the handling / suspension.
