    Car Maintenance 101 - Checking the Oil/Coolant

Was admiring a new Scirocco from a distance at the local servo & noticed the owner was topping up the oil/coolant..

On first glance all appeared ok, but saw the owner was pouring copious amounts of water into the engine bay...I went over to see what he was upto, both oil and coolant caps were off and he was pouring water directly into the oil filler..

Goodness knows how much water put in there but I recommended that he call VW or leave the car for an oil/water change with the servo..

any idea what potential damage would be if he drove off??

By the way, the coolant level was fine!

    Nothing long-term I would think.

Drain it out, replace the filter and engine oil, and hope for the best.

FYI, it probably would've held a good 12 litres or so.

Damage to catalytic converter and other parts of emission system and also the water mixed with engine oil is not a good news for the turbocharger, so yes I would say, longer he drives the greater the damage would be. You can expect the engine oil seal start leaking as well.
