Buying a s/h golf.. what should i go for

    Hey guys,

looking to spend around 10-12 k on a vw.

ive come across a TDI 05 golf comfortline MK5 DSG auto, 150kms. for about 12k.

the other option im looking at is 2000/2001 golf GTI MK4s, manual, similar or a bit less kms.

I know the mk5 is a newer model, and the TDI would be pretty good, but for the people who know their Dubs, what would be a better ride all around. Its pretty hard to find a really good condition mk4 gti for acceptable money (given they are a decade old now). most have a cracked mirror scalp, paint defects like chips/scratches and a few interior faults.

I like both models visually. I think an 05 would present slightly better in terms of paint condition etc though.

Is the DSG 6 speed auto good? and would i miss manual with this setup? Last two cars have been performance manuals (turbo and v8 ).

How does the TDI go in terms of modifications to wake it up a bit? or is it a leave it alone application. i know the GTIs cant get up and boogie with a chip and exhaust.

i know this is a bit of a ramble, but i want to end up with a decent dub and im not sure whether to go for an older model thats a bit more sporty (externally, the mk4 gti looks basically standard which i find a bit strange) or to get a more tame newer model.

Thanks for any insight in helping me make up my own mind. Please dont just say buy the car you want, as im clearly at a crossroad here.

    leigh.

i'd go a MKV TDI if you can pick one up for a good price. $12K is very cheap, so i'd be a bit sus that it's all OK.

The MKV GTI is a decent car but many on the market are overpriced for what they are. Plus, as you say they are getting a bit old. Not entirely sure about chips for the MKV, but I know APR do intake kits etc. Plus, as far as cosmetic mods go, you can add GTI bits.

You don't mention which engine it has: the 1.9L or the 2.0L. The 2.0 is a more powerful engine (16v vs 8v), economy is virtually the same. At that price I'd be guessing this car is a 1.9L.

It's a personal choice. I opted for the dsg because it suits the diesel engine so well. Servicing costs for the dsg box are about $600-1000 every 60k km's, something you wouldn't have to fork out if you chose a manual.

Yes, they respond well to a simple tune (more fuel and boost), or a reputable diesel power box (more fuel only). If power is a concern you'd be best to start with the 2.0L engine.

For what it's worth, my tdi (with a power box) is quicker than my mates' standard mk4 gti, has more features, costs less to run, will have better resale value and looks less dated than the mk4 in my opinion. I know which car I'd rather have but each to their own.

Best thing about the mk4 gti is the relative ease at which you can get more power, a bit boring in standard form.

stay away from the DSG. there are so many threads on this forums where DSG breaks and bills are pretty big.
I'd get a mk5, newer car, more refined, looks better. But i'd get a manual

I wouldn't let that frighten you off the prospect of owning a dsg, the vast majority of owners experience no problems.

It seems to me that most dsg issues appear when the car is relatively young. In my opinion, you have less to worry about purchasing a used car that's several years old.

Certainly an issue to keep in mind when shopping around though. A good idea to get the prospective car checked out by an independant specialist that's aware of these issues.
MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.
