Buying a s/h golf.. what should i go for

    Hey guys,

looking to spend around 10-12 k on a vw.

ive come across a TDI 05 golf comfortline MK5 DSG auto, 150kms. for about 12k.

the other option im looking at is 2000/2001 golf GTI MK4s, manual, similar or a bit less kms.

I know the mk5 is a newer model, and the TDI would be pretty good, but for the people who know their Dubs, what would be a better ride all around. Its pretty hard to find a really good condition mk4 gti for acceptable money (given they are a decade old now). most have a cracked mirror scalp, paint defects like chips/scratches and a few interior faults.

I like both models visually. I think an 05 would present slightly better in terms of paint condition etc though.

Is the DSG 6 speed auto good? and would i miss manual with this setup? Last two cars have been performance manuals (turbo and v8 ).

How does the TDI go in terms of modifications to wake it up a bit? or is it a leave it alone application. i know the GTIs cant get up and boogie with a chip and exhaust.

i know this is a bit of a ramble, but i want to end up with a decent dub and im not sure whether to go for an older model thats a bit more sporty (externally, the mk4 gti looks basically standard which i find a bit strange) or to get a more tame newer model.

Thanks for any insight in helping me make up my own mind. Please dont just say buy the car you want, as im clearly at a crossroad here.

    leigh.
