buying a new car dilemma

Hi guys
i'm new to the forum and am not sure weather this has been covered or not, tried searching but couldnt find anything.

okay so here's my problem, i'm currently looking for my new car, however i'm still on p plate and living in vic, so am restricted to driving turbo and supercharged cars etc.
At first i really wanted to buy the 02 civic type r ep3, and was very close to buying, as it has quite a lot of performance for a NA car. however my dad stopped me cause it was not fuel efficient enough and being an import, it would cost a lot to keep.
He also wont get me any other car that i want, unless its a slow corolla or a Volkswagen.
so we compromised and decided that i will get the golf gti.

what my question is. will the golf gti attract much police attention? and if i debadged it, could i get away with driving it? i would even consider sticking a "tdi" badge on it
also is there any other car that is just as fun but p plate legal?
and i am not into the diesel powered cars...
oh and i am a sensible driver. i don't speed or hoon around.

It's illegal. If you crash you are not insured and will most likely lose your new license.

Suck it up and buy something legal until you are over the restrictions. For not only your own good but everyone else on the roads.

Maybe something like a Bora V5 or 4mo. no turbos but truck loads quicker then a 2lt etc.
I'm glad my first car was a 2lt slow, saved me a lot of money on fuel etc. and I didnt have enough power to go silly while being un-experienced.

no sh*t its illegal, i'm asking if cops would give me trouble if i replaced the gti badge.
not to be rude, but don't tell me that driving a gti will be a hazzard for other drivers on the road, the gti is not that hard to drive, p platers in sydney are allowed to drive them! shouldn't sterotype the mojority or p platers because of the minority who screw up.
in saying that, i do agree with the insurence problem but i know that i am a safe driver and able to handle the responsibility.

I'd just get something cheap and reliable. Like under $10k. By the time you're off your P's you will have saved up enough to be able to buy an ok car, maintain it, and modify it.

Will you have to maintain it at all or is that being paid for?

Your first mistake was writing about how slow Volkswagen were. Nice way to introduce yourself. Insult the members and then talk up how your not a hoon. Nice work

SO let me get this right, you come on here asking a question to which you already know the answer to, and then start throwing insults around when you get told what you already knew.

De-badge a GTI all you like it is still a GTI and still illegal, plus an accident doesn't have to be your fault (as you are such it good driver it wouldn't be anyway), you would be the illegal driver and be prosecuted, plus have a $50k car that your insurance company (or your dads) wont cover as the driver was not licensed.

GTI's are also fairly distinguishable as they have a different front end, different exhaust and wheels, and contrary to what you believe, police aren't stupid. Trust me if you get pulled over and show even half of the attitude you have come on here with then they will be looking for things to book you for.

De badging is not going to stop the police from giving you a fine for driving a turbo car. They are not stupid! As soon as they look you up on their data base they'll know its a turbo car. Just be patient like every other P plater and buy a car that you can legally drive.

As far as I know P platers in Sydney are also not able to drive a GTI.

I thought there was a list of turbo cars on the list that P platers could drive that had very small engines with a turbo for efficiency and I thought *think* that includes the new MK6, although don't quote me on that and check with the relevant local authorities.

As for insurance, you can probably get insurance to drive a Turbo car (since there are exemptions available) although since you don't actually have an exemption the insurance company *may* well be within their rights to void your insurance even if the vehicle is properly listed and the policy paid up when you have an accident.

As for the Police. I'm sure there are many people out there that drive cars they shouldn't be and don't get caught, same as I'm sure there are plenty of people who drive unregistered or uninsured without issue. That doesn't make it right.

Do your time like everyone else then get into something faster, or if you really can't wait get something slow and cheap to drive to and from work and put the money you would have spent on a GTI into a track car and go nuts on the track.
