    Buying interstate

    Hi guys.

Can anyone that has bought from interstate tell me if (after I get a blue slip) if I'll need new CTP or if the policy from the previous state is still good?

I'm buying from SA and registering in NSW

I'm almost certain you'll have to re-register it and re-insure it in the new state. In SA the CTP is part of the vehicle registration. When you cancel the registration you'll also be cancelling the CTP insurance (you'll get a refund for the unused portion).

Will I (the buyer) be eligible for the refund or will it be the seller?

    Thanks!

It really depends on how the transaction is being handled (privately or by a dealer).

Most dealers will want to de-register the car and organise a temporary permit for you to drive it back interstate (if you're not getting it transported). Normally the dealership will arrange for transfer of the vehicle into your name as this guarantees that any speeding fines etc go to you (and not the dealer). Given that they can't do this if you don't live in that state most will go down the path of de-registering the car. I'm not sure if this is a requirement for dealerships to do this or whether it's just good business practice. In any case the dealer may pocket the refund - all depending on how the contract is written up.

If you buy privately then it's up to you and the seller to determine what arrangement you're going to make. You'd have to check how easy it is to cancel the registration in another state or if you're better to do it before you leave and again have temporary registration. Usually the temporary registration usually includes 14 days CTP.

The trouble with doing this is that the speeding fines/demerit points will go to the registered owner of the vehicle.... which will be the previous owner in this case.

I won't be in the state to pickup the car. Having it inspected before finalising the sale and then it'll be transported to me.. With rego.

I had thought about driving it until the registration expires, but I'm guessing that I'll have the stamp duty and potentially a fine(?) waiting for me when registration is due..

It won't be easy, but it sounds like moving it into NSW registration immediately is the right thing to do.

Thanks guys. Very helpful advice. Much appreciated.

There is normally a grace period to change the rego over before the vehicle becomes unregistered and uninsured.

In QLD its 14 days from you having a residential address in the state and 3 months for your licence

As you live in NSW you should check with NSW RTA as to how long it is.

I bought a van in WA and changed it over the day we arrived back in QLD Got the refund from WA after QLD RTA notified them of the change.

Cost $60 for roadworthy $90 Gas cert $180 rego.

Will be more in Mexico LOL

Read this Perhaps a unregisterd permit would be cheapest

I never got a fine as the vehicle was not registered In NSW. But QLD. I know this as a friend of mine bought a car off a dealer and never transferred it into his names. After 14. Day you get fined. Not so if it's an interstate vehicle. I ever supplied the receipt for the stamp duty. It was 7 month previous.
