There may or may not be a thread for this, but I can't see one.
I'm looking forward to taking my R on its first proper road trip up Putty Rd in a couple of weeks. Last time it was in my wife's car, we had a 2yo in the backseat, and my wife was heavily pregnant . But this time it's just me and the R.
What's the best longer drive or day trip you've done in your R/Golf, and why was it the best?

I've not done a drive in my R yet but am planning to drive over Mt Nebo/Mt Glorious next week.

Yeah, it's great. Very scenic and with a sensible speed limit so you can have some fun without having to be silly. It's good fun in a car with big brakes!

When living in Melbourne my VWW colleague xR360 took me on a nice day cruise up through Kinglake, Bonnie Doon and then back down through Black Spur and Healesville.
I was a bit stunned about how many nice roads were posted at 80 which was a downer, but I was surprised by how courteous the lycra brigade were on some of the roads - the twats in Adelaide could learn an enormous amount. Then again so could the drivers..
One of the most mental roads I have seen though was the 15km or so to Copperlode Dam in Cairns - unfortunately when living there I only did it once slowly in an SUV.
Adelaide is blessed by the Hills and south coast all on the doorstep with loads of decent drives, but need to head further out to skip the lycras who don't believe any rules apply to them here.

I used to enjoy a good ride through the hills (it's been a few years), but tended to be finished before most traffic started, and we would stick to quieter roads, in single file unless it was unsafe to do so.
There are idiots every where, and in every group.
The best drives I've had were with little to no traffic, or a couple of like minded folk, often around 2am.
100% agree, wasn't intended as a rant against lycras, more just a general comment on the roads in question. I've ridden in the past as well and always aided drivers and vice versa - it's only the lycra packs who ruin it for the sensible riders much as idiot drivers ruin it for the rest of us.
Anyway back to the roads.
Worth mentioning there will be some good routes mapped for Adelaide folk in the meets thread - I am guessing likewise the other states will have theirs.

I've driven my GTI on the Old Pacific Hwy when I was driving to Sydney to Newcastle. Really nice road, lots of turns and was able to give the brakes a good workout. There are however signs warning that it's a highly policed area for motorcyclist, so don't go too silly. Beats the boring F3 (M1) and lots less idiots on the road.
