Aurion quicker than a GTI, really?

Far out...there's tons of cars faster than a GTI. We're all VW fans for pretty similar reasons I'm sure... excellent interiors, excellent fuel economy for the performance. I don't need the last word in performance. I want a daily driver that makes me smile each time I get into the car.

For the record... I test drove the Camry on the weekend (not the Aurion) and the interiors are pretty ordinary. The way the doors shut... .urgh!!!! Plus... what's up with the foot operated Park brake Toyota?? Can't see how their target demographic puts up with it. The arthritis would make it hard work to operate!

So yes, the Aurion is faster than the GTI... but get's handed on fuel economy, the interior and build quality.

Agree with this.. I thought the hot hatch concept was about taking an every day hatch and upgrading the engine/suspension to turn it into an affordable and practical performance vehicle.

Admittedly that's blurred a little these days with things like M135i, A45 and tuned Rs etc but like most I didn't buy a GTI for the 0-100 time - although I am still amazed by a hatch with so much interior space, performance and economy.. coulda bought an SSV for similar coin and smashed the 0-100 sprint (and have done so before) but this time that didn't interest me. I enjoy corners now too.

On a partially related note, a nun in full dress behind the wheel of a Getz tried to drag my better half this morning in a traffic light duel, for no reason whatsoever.. I wonder what the nun could achieve in an Aurion.

No. It's not illegal to drive fast. It's illegal to exceed the speed limit. Different things.

You can get the car working well through a corner and punch out without breaking any road rules at all.

If you don't get that, then the Toyota dealership is that way.

There is no law against acceleration. I guess it could be classified as dangerous driving but giving it a squirt onto the freeway up to the speed limit is legal.

As has previously been stated, I like to think of not getting to the top, but how you get there. A german Volkswagen is a tier above an aurion in terms of class.

Technically even giving it a bootfull up to the speed limit is illegal now due to the hoon laws .

Actually, the yellow signs are still factored in if there is an incident (i.e. you crash into another car) as you were advised to drive at a speed less than the limit.

Also, you can get done under the hoon laws in QLD for driving in a rapid pace by yourself, it just usually happens when there is another car beside you at the traffic lights.

If you can live without the classy, elegant interior and a German badge, the Commodore SS gets you into a V8 for $47790, while the Falcon XR6 Turbo is $46235. A RWD drivetrain comes standard, but add $2000 for an automatic gearbox. Objectively speaking, they're good value for money.

The XR6T in particular is great value for money if straight line performance is the biggest factor. It's quicker than the HSV's for a lot less coin. Plus you can get very cheap performance upgrades that provide substantial improvements.

That's the thing about performance when talking about the GTI compared to Aurion/Falcon/Commodore (in 6cyl flavours). We can upgrade the GTI to make it quicker but it doesn't take much for the Falcon owner to upgrade and be well back in front.

I'll still pick class over straight line performance though. I love the comfort and ride of my 118TSI. Today I'm test driving a Golf GTI. I'm interested to see how it compares to the Polo GTI we have.

Yeah that's a good point. I personally prefer the G6E Turbo - understated and a nice car. If Ford could shrink it by about 10-15% I would have a crack at one I reckon.

They'd also have to add nav, camera, parking sensors, stop start, smarten up the interior for me to consider too. I like the drivetrain, suspension tuning and external looks. The rest of the vehicle... not so much.
