Bass player here, have played for 20+ years also. If I were you I'd spend the $600 on just the guitar, then save for an amp or borrow one. Or buy a super cheap 2nd hand practice amp to tide you over for a while. $300 - $600 for a guitar/amp combo will not get you much. If you're looking to get back into playing guitar again, playing a super-cheap guitar isn't going to provide much inspiration.

I totally agree on this one (And not just because I'm a bassist too! )

I bought a crappy ashton bass kit for my first off a mate of mine...he had it for a few months and got sick of not being able to play well - and to be honest it was a mistake buying it because I upgraded about two months after. There's a huge difference in your learning alone (let alone the stuff you learn about when you have tone to play with etc) when you buy a better instrument.

I have always enjoyed playing ibanez guitars and basses, and as such would suggest buying one of the kits they offer, if you don't wanna spend $600 on a guitar alone they're quite affordable, and the guitar itself is still decent in the pack. Of course if you are keen to get something that won't be too crap for you after a little while, then you can get a nice cort guitar or a better ibanez. I personally don't like fenders or squires, they just give me the poo's lol.

played about more than played well.
Fender Telecaster (left handed), tobacco sunburst with a Fender twin reverb amp (still has the original instructions and warrantee card!).
The amp is the CBS era amp, which some deride, but it sounds quite nice - oh yeah - valves!
