The fact most mechanics recomend them and the parts backup I am not to surprised - like you Aaron I am sceptic how do come to this figure ?
I was watching an ad tonight and was surprised by this line:
87% of new Toyotas sold in the last 20 years are still on the road in Australia today.
Source: Toyota Australia: Durability
Now there isn't any * or any extra information to define how they came to this number... and an interesting number it is although I really to wonder how it is arrived at. Remember we are talking *new* cars in the last 20 years so that's '91 onwards. There isn't any list to say it includes or excludes commercial vehicles or what? Surely there is a metric ton of Toyota vans that have done more than enough kilometers to kill them...
Now I need to assume that 87% is quite a good number or they wouldn't be using it, after all it would only take another company to come out and say "well 95% of our cars are still on the road..." and Toyota would look a little silly, but that's not to say they aren't doing it anyway.
So what do you think? Is there a way to check their numbers or compare them with anything else?

Porsche came out with a similar figure a few years back about all its Porsches. 80% of all Porsches that have been sold since 19XX are either racing, vintage registered or daily registered. It was in an add in a car magazine .

I'm curious as to what cars would have the worst %? Early KIA, Daewoo, Saabs? French cars?
Toyota would have got the currently registered figures from the various Road/Traffic authorities in each state.
That figure suprises me as I would have thought that more than 13% would have been written off in car accidents by now (repair value being greater than 50% of the insured value).
I'd like to add my own part to that headline.....
87% of Toyotas sold since 1991 are still registered....... and are being driven around the council cleanups scrounging or by a government employee.

I can certainly believe that claim .....
To date I've personally owned 8 VWs (currently on #7 & #8 ) , 6 BMWs and 5 Toyotas amongst other brands. All 5 of those Toyota's are still running whilst not all the VWs or BMWs still are .... .... and 2 of those 5 where pre-1990 ....
And if I have to drive from Brisbane to Perth today, I'd pick a Toyota above a VW or a BMW as I'm pretty confident the Toyota will get me there without issues. The 5 Toyota's I've had have been the most reliable and troublefree cars I've ever owned. Not much fun to drive but super reliable. Cannot say the same for the VWs or BMWs I've owned I'm afraid.
