As far as reliability goes, you cannot beat a Honda or Toyota...no doubt about that at all...
I'm also not surprised, whenever a friend or family member asks me to recommend a used car it's almost always a Toyota or Honda. I also agree with the comment about vw's probably being on the bottom of the list, a friend has a mk3 golf and it's in the workshop more than on the road, I told him to get a corolla!

Our family pet is a 1986 holden camira. 405k on the clock with only one clutch replaced and a head gasket replaced about 10years ago. It has snapped 3 timing belts... it is the only car you just stick another one on and away she goes. Only thing I can put it down to is regular servicing and a gentle life.
...or Subaru.
We had the Forester for 11 years, our first Subaru was L series, we had it for 5 years prior to Forester.

In April 2010 Toyota sold its 5 millionth vehicle in Australia. Australia has about 16 million registered vehicles. 87% of 5 million is 4.3 mil. This means that about a quarter of all vehicles on the road in Aust are Toyotas.

The word "guess" doesn't really have a place when it comes to testing the validity of statistics.
