I'll be speaking to my dealer about this once I return although the car being tuned probably won't help my cause (should I have any problems).

Why does VW insist on using DSG's if they're having so many problems? I mean, I'd rather drive a ****ty DSG over a CVT but there's gotta be a decent slosh box that can pick up the slack?

I had the ECU flash done on a 2008 Jetta that i used to own... it was done after owning the car for about 12 months. I had the mechatronics unit replaced, the gearbox reset numerous times and finally the gearbox replaced (all within warranty period). At no stage did i reset the tune back to stock before taking it to the dealer to look at the gearbox problems. Nothing was ever said to me regarding the tune so i dont know if they checked for it or just concentrated on the gearbox... but VW germany was in direct communication with the dealer as to what things to test and check before they gave the go ahead for the replacement.
So in my experience there was no questioning whether the tune had caused the fault.

Even more interesting will be how VW view those that have had a DSG tune done ....

They will be able to tell easily with the diagnostics they have.

Will do but it won't be for at least three weeks.

Exactly, I don't believe my APR tune creates any extra stress or wear on the gearbox because the car isn't driven hard. I honestly might as well not even have the tune at all.

VWGA don't see it that way. They rejected my DSG warranty claim on the basis that the ECU tune put more torque to the gearbox. Ultimately, my dealer rectified the problem and took the fight to VWGA.

This is interesting in one of the details
VW Begins Production of New 1.8- and 2.0-liter Engines in Mexico | Car and Driver Blog

Engines built in Mexico for North American VWs (and out Jetta I think).

They seem to think if the US Passat uses the 2.0T engine it will be mated to a normal torque converter gearbox.
I think there are several VW and Audi models sold in the USA that come with "normal" auto transmissions that the rest of the world are hitched to DSG.

Will VW's access to new 8/9 speed torque convert autos mean a winding down of the DSG gearbox to service only performance and cheaper models?

It gets worse, the tune post dated the reporting of the fault.
