So, you want a 10 years warranty for the whole car?![]()
Way back in the late 70s/early 80s, due to premature failures of emission control equipment mandated from mid 1976, the automotive supply and manufacturing industry committed (to govt) to a manufacturing quality ensuring a MINIMUM design/manufacture and operating life of 10 years.
It was an 'implied' guarantee thus failure inside the 10 years also implies a product not meeting the 'fit for purpose' OR 'not of merchantable quality'.....I would think.
Is it the case that the 'industry' has been 'getting away with it' and conveniently taking the owners for an easy ride?
Why do we owners pay up when they fail in the 3-10 year period if 'they' were serious?.

Facepalm indeed!
Try again......it simply asks about items including labour associated with premature(?) failure of EGR/DPF type components of purely the emission control system.
Where does "the whole car" come from?
Do you represent those who don't want this discussed?
Further
From the Californian EPA's website, it appears that if a light vehicle. ' fails an emission test ' due to a component failure, the owner is not financially responsible for the repair.
It seems the period is 10years/120,000 miles.
So if you have a failure of an EGR frinstance, it seems you go for a 'test'.
If it's not true I'm open to persuasion
...and I always thought that the warranty on anything is for the faults and the defects from manufacturer. Not for normal wear and tear.
The emission system life depends from the quality of the fuel, maintainance and how is the vehicle used.

i think California drove this obscure 'commitment' from the automotive industry to ensure that Beijing type air quality was dealt with in a permanent way.
One of the few advantages of old age is being around when the 76 Kingswoods and subsequent Commadores with their rubbish air pumps, vacuum actuators and tin flaps combined with mild steel mufflers and pipes......muffler shops were everywhere in those days.
Stainless lasts 10 years.
California exemption
modification
abuse
failure to follow schedule service.
i think we follow California's standards with a slight lag time for our manufacturers to adopt......basically if you want to see the future, particularly in the pacific rim countries, .......Green Car Reports.
I wouldn't imagine DPFs to be covered for 10 years? Although failures are uncommon, they are still classified as a wear and tear item..

seems to indicate 5 years 100,000kms
not ten but better than standard .....I would think industry would have indicated that diesel EGRs would be too difficult to ensure 10 years.
its probably a moot point and in any case I think time is running out for light diesels if your intention is economy.
Unless you need heavy towing the figures don't add up anymore.
Even VW are indicating a different priority now.
