1/2 litre difference on oil dipstick?

Not sure if any one has the same problem, when I check my oil level in the morning, it is at MIN level, but when running 20 mins and leave it about 5 mins, it is between MIN and MAX level( which is half litre difference) Which one is correct? Should I add more oil?

The accuracy of the dipstick depends on the method used to check the oil level.

Some cars require the engine to be at operating temperature before turning it off and waiting 'x' minutes before checking the dipstick. Others require the engine to be stone cold - it just depends on the car.

The ground should also be level, as inclines affect the oil level.

The owner's manual should have the proper procedure (and hopefully prevent one from under or overfilling).

No, the oil expands with heat, and gets thinner.

You're talking about multi-grade oils, and the higher number. This represents the equivalent viscosity of a mono-grade oil while hot. The multi-grade oil is thinner than it was when cold, but not as thin as it would be as a mono-grade oil.

If you don't believe me, drain your engine while it's hot. The oil will run out more easily than when it's cold.

It sounds like you have room for another half litre - is there any reason why you wouldn't add some?
