Yes, but because the Poms have been conditioned by high fuel prices over the yeara, stupid clarkson bought this as a large safe car for his daughter when in Aus it is just above the micro car category.
I would only buy VW if she wants quality, the dumb young girls at my work mainly buy the horrible hyundai i30s and love them . Proves most gave no idea.

suzuki alto?
I'd get a Honda Jazz if I had to spend that kind of money. The Girlfriend has one, it's a great car, very versatile interior, good quality and feel compared to a Toyota Yaris, and the 1.5l / 7speed engine/gearbox combo makes for an intersting drive (better than I would have thought).

+1 for the honda jazz. but just dont go for the cvt tranny. Its a common expensive fault that seems to happen about a year or two after the warranty expires. Happened to out 2nd Jazz. Cost us $4000 to repair otherwise would've cost us $5500 to replace. Our first Jazz (manual) was a beauty. Never had any problems.
I know it has to be a new car but...an old Mitsubishi mirage low kms under 50 for around 6k
It's Gona get beat up so why drive anything else in a city?

Haha some interesting and diverse suggestions there. Thanks for all the input.
To conclude, she went with the Yaris based on familiarity (her previous car) and value for money (Toyota offered better discounts than the others).
We also test-drove the Nissan Micra and Ford Fiesta. The Micra was a little bit disappointing - fine for it's job, but the 1.2L 3 cylinder feels gutless between 30 - 60km and it feels like a budget vehicle.
I liked the Fiesta- good power, nice interior. But having 2 airbags on a base model is a real shortcoming in this segment and it wasn't as sharply priced/discounted. If it was my money, I probably still would have gone with the Fiesta and forgone the safety but I can't fault her on her choice of the Yaris for what she needs and also the reliability and servicing costs.
