Good size and offset I think.
No bigger than 15s on a Mk1 and 38 offset should be fine.
There are heaps of second hand Jap wheels on ebay in 4x100, just have to keep a look out.
forgive my laziness please but I am still working out how to determine offset and I wonder if anyone would comment as to wether these will fit my MK1. I will not be lowering the car at this stage but I am wondering what would happen if I lowered it mildly say 15mm. Pls forgive my learning curve on this subject I have always bought mags second hand and simply fitted them to the vehicle, the lack of choice in this area means I will probably have to order my rims.

Always been a fan of the sportmaxx's I wanted to get a set for my old GL but instead got smart and bought a VR6
Lots of people on www.vwvortex.com running these, run a search to get some inspiration.

mk 1 CB is 57mm. so the wheels need to be 57.1 or bigger. you'll be able to run them, with hub centric spacers (although they aren't a nessecity in some peoples opinions)
thanks Jarred are these spacers commonly available

you will have difficulty if coilovers are installed with the offset of those wheels
cheers

I don't want to lower the car much but I do want to go to town on the suspension. Now to really admit my ignorance what are the differences between normal and coilover suspension.
