Double check fitment of the centres just in case. My Mk4 steelies (15", oval holes) just fit over the 288mm brakes.
As a price guideline, I paid $80 for a second-hand set of steels, $160/wheel for the widening (price included new barrels, and labour for machining out the centres and fitting them into the new barrels, all to my backspacing figures), and $40/wheel for powdercoating (my wheel guy outsourced it as he didn't have the facilities for that). The lowest I was quoted for was $140/wheel for widening, so it looks you Melbournians get it good in respects to steel wheel widening!
Have the shop outline thoroughly exactly what they do to widen your steelies and double check with them about the legality of them. I think for them to be "legal" you'll need to go through engineering (not sure about this, anyone confirm?).
PM me if you want some offset/backspacing/sizing help for fitment on a VR6.
