I will give a vote for leaving them black, and another one for widening them to similar proportions as Ray's steelies. I'm not too sure how good coloured ones would look on a VR like yours, maybe gunmetal would look ok?
Leave them as they are
Paint them red
Paint them orange
Paint them white
Paint them green
Paint them silver
Paint them body colour
Widen the hell out of them ...
Here are the wheels in questions(I have another two without tires):
And here is the car:

Hmnn intriguing, but I'm still unwilling to modify the guards since the paint on this car is quite good, bar the bumpers.
I wonder whats the max I could go on them without touching the guards? 15x8 ET 45 and what 15x7.5 ET38?

All wheel specialists I've seen don't band steelies, only re-barrel them. In that case, there's not a lot of sizes to go for - I know you can go 8", but the next step up will be 10". Not sure about the sizes under 8"!
For conservative, you'll be fine with 8" ET30-35 for the fronts and ET 20-25 for the rears. Flush at best, and still won't foul suspension.
