    You'll get just a very small amount of stretch, bugger all really... and yes the tread will be reduced by 10mm but you'll barely notice it especially with a slightly higher profile tyre in the 45 series.

    If the wheel is already stretching the rubber I fear it would be just as bad with 1cm less width on the tread...I guess it would be safer to just stick with 215/40r17...I just dislike the fact that I have minimal choice =/

    Currently the load rating is 87w...would it be dangerous to go 83w load rating?

    I don't know how hard you've been looking but there's a plethora of 215/40R17 tyres out there, and with good reviews might I add.
