Tyre brand: Achilles, and other questions.

Any experience with these: Achilles, I'm looking at 2233 Everyday Comfort.

Also considering Kumho KU31s but there's a price difference.

Also... does anyone run different tyres front to back as there are different needs from each end of the car, especially in a nose heavy 6cyl FWD. Was thinking something shorter life higher grip at the front and something longer life (/cheaper because they're going to scrub a bit) at the back.

    Thoughts?

Achilles ? never heard of them but there are so many brands these days its hard to keep up

Kumho KU31 is not a bad tyre considering its not that pricey, i have these on my meshies and am very happy with the grip..... the only thing with the KU31s is that they dont stretch very well compared to other similar priced tyres like your Nankang and Falken

Stay clear of the cheap Chinese tyres. I had Achilles once, they become out of shape and the tread is really dangerous in the wet. From my experience.

Hmmm, stretch is an issue as I'm probably going 205 on 7.5"

and yeah Andrew think you're right, I had Maxxis and Nankang and they're pretty rubbish. Especially compared with the Goodyear on previously. Gah...I should have stuck with 15"s and got decent tyres.

Ku31's are a good tyre. On the US review sites, they do very well. In Syd I was able to get them for $110 a corner.

I find they can go hard if you track them, but for street driving, good if you get them cheap.

Wow, that's cheap, what size, and what shop?

    I'm still undecided between 205 and 215 on a 17" wheel and a 40 sidewall.

I just put Kumho KU39's on my Polo GTI and I think they are a great value for money performance tyre. Very grippy in the wet and dry. I have had KU31's before and they were ok but overall I was not happy with them. The KU39's are excellent.

    hey mate,

i talked to the guys at option 1 garage and they rated achilles tyres quite highly - they apparently use them on one of their drift cars and have had no issues. the guy was saying that they're relatively new to australia, and hence the skepticism, but that could be said for any tyre that isnt bridgestone/pirelli/goodyear/michelin.

the mp3s, commodore, and perth wrx forums seem to give the achilles tyres good reviews for daily driving - the people who've HAD them on say that they've been grippy and long lasting. the only negative reviews i've seen were on SAU, where the bright sparks nay-say them straight off the bat, without having driven them, solely based on "achilles is the same word that's in the term 'achilles heel', so they arent allowed to be good".

i'd give them a bash if i needed new tyres - no one in the polo forums seems to run bf goodrich gforce sports, but i tried them and am VERY happy with them - very grippy, the give you PLENTY of warning when they break, and they break VERY gradually and progressively, and they wear very well, lasting for ages. it pays to try something new, especially with so many different tyre brands and tyres.

Yeah, but the difference between spending 440 all up and .... 300 a corner? They work best with stiff suspension or higher PSI (39 in the front) with normal suspension setup (in the Polo). They didn't heat cycle well (post track day went hard).

205/40/17 and 215/40/17 at different times. From Tempe Tyres. Option 1 can do them close to that price at times from memory...

Not sure why you would say $300 per corner. I got 4 fitted balanced and wheel alignment for $765.00.
