In regards to dropping my Golf.
Instead of forking out about ~$600 for some coils, is there a cheaper alternative to get it low? Springs? I'm not too fussed about the ride, it can be rough and bumpy, I'm a tough guy, but I just want to slam it without the cost! I'm a uni student, and a poor one at that.

You can get king springs put in which can be made for any height for around $350 at any good tire place. How much did you want to drop it?

I was once in your situation, at uni no money...

I got springs made to the ride height I wanted by Allsprings in Moorebank (Sydney). From memory they cost me around $390 for the set of 4. At that time it was the cheapest option I could find.

You're better off saving up a bit and going for the $600 coils - they're already the cheaper alternative! It'd be hard to drop it really low with just aftermarket springs and standard struts. You won't be satisfied paying half for a half-arsed lowering. I know I wasn't.

but seriously, i had my coilovers delivered (in less than a week) for 500.. i think that's quite reasonable for like... nearly 5 inches of droppage.(hottuning ftw!!) also, you should probably run sport shocks which would probably bring up the cost of king springs/lowered springs etc to.. about the same as hottuning. and they're not that bad either

or buy hottuning. theres plenty of poor uni students on here so that excuse wont work im afraid!! 500 is extremely cheap. if you're a "tough guy" then man up and pay the extra 150

I payed like 300 for my (used but decent quality) suspension, matched lowered springs and shock combo. The ride is firm, but the ride hight isn't as low as I'd like.

Yes.

+ you're getting new suspension, rather than low springs on worn shocks, which is never a good combo!

Save up. Do it once, and do it right. It's best in the long run.

You can get your standard springs re-set but i would save for the coil overs...

But keep a look out on eBay for vr6 lowering springs as cheap as $150
