I received my wheels today (18x8.5 ET45) and to my knowledge, they were meant to sit flush with the guards (as they do on the GTI we tried them on). Well, they don't. I'm pretty ****ty as this wasn't the look I was going for, but I've got them now so I'm going to try and work with the situation therefore I know absolutely nothing about having them on my car and what to expect/the limitations of having them.
They only protrude 10mm out from the front guards (haven't tried them on the rear yet) but what I'd like to know is how having stretched tires on the car would effect handling/grip. I'm not a boy racer and I'm in no way going to track my car. However; I do enjoy a spirited mountain run on the odd occasion.
Thanks in advance,
Alex.

was the gti lower? Could be why yours are sticking out. (lower it some and they will pull inside the guards most likely)
I have 205/45s on my 9 and havnt had any problems so far... But that is on the rear so dont know how it effects turning if it was up front...

Is it possible to get the inside hub shaved to increase the offset and bring the wheel inwards, even if its only 5mm?

I didn't think of it last night, but Dylan raises a good point Alex. Need to also check whether it rubs on full lock...
I'm no engineer, but I don't think there's enough 'meat' where the wheel bolts seat to take even 5mm off.
