    I may be showing my ignorance here, but doesn't rolling resistance = grip?

    rolling resistance is frictional losses created by the tyre on the ground. Lower the frictional losses, the less energy the engine requires to push the car along ie: less fuel.

    something like that anyway!

    Yep.

    There's an Autocar test out their that also tested rolling resistance. There was an almost perfect correlation between Best to Worst tyres & highest to lowest rolling resistance. I was quite keen on changing to low RR tyres until i read that.
