Reducing offset by maching back pad (hub) COST?

I have my eye on a set of 17x8 ET35 rims. I want to get the back of the hub machined 5-10mm as I've had this size/offset before & it wasn't optimum for the vehicle.

Does anyone know what it costs to get the back of the hub shaved?? (assuming enough metal, etc)

I know a few of you have had this done

    thx

Hey Brad, these wheel offset topics often do my head head in,
this is not helped by all the dodgy internet offset calculators that return incorrect results

You can't change the wheel offset, that's fixed inside the wheel,
so I assume you are trying to influence the scrub radius (driving feel and feedback)?

When I did my (front) BBK I checked the stock rim to shock clearance which was around 18mm
(My shocks are 55mm diameter - some Octavia's come with 50mm shocks)
Going from 7.5-ET51 to 8-ET35 I think this will move the wheel ~10mm closer to the shock
Milling 10mm off the hub would put the rim hard against the shock - I think???

But some of the Golf boys do run 8" ET35 - I want to know how that works

Shaving material from the inside of the hub will actually increase the offset as it is measured from the back of the hub to the outter rim.

So shaving 5mm off the hub will give you an increase in offset of 5mm.

Yeah, sorry, I know what I need/want - just not saying it right.

I'm looking at another set of BBS 17x8 in ET35 which I ran before. The change in scrub radius made it feel weird & they stuck out past the guards at the front. I've seen another set very cheap. Cheap enough that it may be worthwhile to machine the back pad of the wheel & bring the ET to 40 or maybe even 45.

Currently have 7.5" ET50. If I go 8" ET44 it will give me the same inner clearance between rim & strut & 12mm extra poke.

The last set of BBS had more than enough excess metal to remove at least 5mm off the back pad of the wheel.

I just need to know how many dollars it will cost to do it. I know The Hawk had his done on the Cabrio...

Martin: Your 1st scenario will move the wheel 10mm away from the damper, milling 10mm off will maintain the status quo

Brad, contact BSA Wheels, they're not too far from you @ Peakhurst - Holden, Ford Wheels & Tyres | Nuts & Spacers | Sydney & Online.

Bring a wheel with you and discuss with them what you want done. The guys there will decide if it can be done or not, and the approximate cost. It's a custom job so there is no flat rate.

    As ray said.

Right, I thought you were taking material off the hub on the car
Certainly machining the wheel will take you where you want to go

I have my Oettinger RZ wheels done because they were ET35 and I wanted them to tuck in a little further. While I seriously considered leaving them at that offset, for me the MK6 doesn't quite work with 18x8" ET35, it's just a little too much.

In any case two of my wheels were in need of repair so repair x 2 + milling back of the full set was ~$450 from memory at AllMag in Ingleburn:
    All Mag Wheel Repairs

They did a great job with the repairs with everything balancing up perfect

Sadly after many attempts at getting hub rings I ended up having centre bore re-milled to suit standard rings (rather then get a set of custom rings).

On the upside it's all together and looks awesome

    Thanks guys.
I've already owned a set of these wheels that weren't worth machining as they were too banged up. I measured them up then & 8mm was do-able without thinning the area around the bolt holes excessivel.

I'd do it myself if I had access to a lathe with enough bed clearance or a mill with a fly cutter. Have a small clue as I spent 12 months on punishment duty during my apprenticeship making parts for the refurbishment of HIFAR at Lucas Heights.

Just need an idea on price as I don't want to turn a set of bargain wheels into a money pit.

    Hi martin,

seems you've got your offsets confused again.

this is the only calculator you'll need to figure out offsets.

    1010TIRES.COM - Wheel Offset Calculator

If a wheel is 8" ET35, machining 5mm off the back of the wheel, would then make the wheel 8" ET40. If you can imagine, the machining of the material moves the mounting face of the wheels further inwards (towards the shock). Hope this clears it up a bit for you.
